running in the dark - flashlight? headlamp? other?

Does anyone out there run in the dark and use either a flashlight or headlamp or something else? I've decided that it would be much safer to use some sort of light when running in the dark (to see cracks, roots, sticks, ice and whatever else might be waiting to turn an ankle). I'm pretty sure I would not like wearing a headlamp and holding a flashlight seems like it would put my hand in an unnatural and uncomfortable position for running. I thought about rigging up a headlamp by shortening the strap and wearing it across my knuckles, thus allowing it to point forward while in a natural running position. I mainly run in a park with street lights in some areas but not all. Some parts are just plain dark.

So, my questions are:

1. What are pros and cons of a flashlight vs. a headlamp?

2. If you use a headlamp, how many lumens and is it bright enough?

3. Is the headlamp-strapped-to-a-hand idea ridiculous?

I'll hang up now and listen to your response...

Thanks,

Joe

Shoe Help.....Beginner here!

I am needing help finding some good recomendations for my next shoe.

I am not exactly a beginner, but running has always just been a minor supplement to my workouts, and only done seriously around the time of a PT test.

I am considering a trail shoe since I will be heading to some training for the Army and I can expect to be exposed to snow, rain and a variety of terrain(nothing technical...just grass, resistance tracks with gravel, rough roads, etc). I am almost concerned that if I get a trail shoe that I will not have a smooth enough platform for being on the road as well. It would also be nice to have a shoe that I can take on light hikes when off duty.

I also have ankle stability issues with fairly neutral mechanics (but I do have a tendency to supinate when I am tired), which has me a bit concerned about a shoe that may be too high profile or have too think of a sole.

Does anyone have any ideas of some shoes I should be looking at.

My current shoe is the Asics GT-2130 which feels pretty ok, but almost too much cushioning in the heel. I do have a wider foot, that is not quite wide enough for a wider size in some brands, but a narrow shoe will not work well at all.

Thanks!

Nike + Sensor---Questions

Hi there,

I'm curious about the Nike + Sensor because I was thinking about getting this for my husband for Christmas. He just started running again over the summer, and he wishes that he could have more information about his runs, so I thought that this would be a good idea for a gift. I also bought him an Ipod Nano for Christmas as well. The only problem is that he doesn't have the Nike + shoes that store the chip, so I was wondering if anyone has used the chip and put in in/on their running shoes a different way, and if the readings were accruate if you did that as opposed to buying the Nike + shoes. Also, with the Nike + Sportband, do you need to have the chip in your shoe for that as well? I was thinking as that for an alternative, but if I do that, I will still have the same issue with where the sensor can go on his shoe to be effective.

If anyone has any experience with this, if you could provide some feedback, I would appreciate it!

Thanks.
