Stay hydrated this summer

Summer is here! That means beach time, fireworks, late sunsets... and heat. Most people don't realize the importance of staying hydrated -- and this problem is especially prevalent in the summer months. Did you know you can last up to 33% longer in a workout if you are properly hydrated? Be proactive -- don't wait until you're thirsty to down a sports drink. Make sure you are getting the proper balance of fluid, electrolytes and sodium, on your runs, rides and workouts. How much water should you be drinking and what type of water should you take along on a workout?

Check out these articles to learn more about staying properly hydrated:

http://www.active.com/story.cfm?story_id=13225

http://active.com/story.cfm?story_id=13857

http://active.com/story.cfm?story_id=13165

Drink responsibly this summer!

Slow Water Absorption

I get a bloated feeling but I also feel dehydrated? My rides can be as long as 6-7 hours so keeping hydrated is very important. Typically I drink cyto-max at a rate of about 1 bottle every half hour (10miles)or as much as I feel I can absorb. When my workout is over, I drink lots of water for several hours, so I kind-of know I am dehydrated. Is their a way to improve my bodies ability to absorb water?

Tracking Water Intake

Hi Everyone,

Recently, I was having trouble keeping track of how much water I was drinking throughout the day. I know it's important to maintain hydration, not just during exercise, but before and after. Looking online, I saw a lot of clever ideas on how to remember how much you drank that day. The best thing I found was a cup called the AquaTally. I've been using it now for a few weeks and love it. It's a plastic, double-walled tumbler with straw that has a band you turn to track how many cups of water you drink. This is way cheaper, and better for the environment, than buying plastic throw-away bottles and makes it easy for me to stay hydrated. Thought I would share in case anyone else is having the same issue as me! You can find more info at www.myaquatally.com.

In Response to Galloway's "20 Tips to Stay Cool on a Summer Run"

One of the tips the great Jeff Galloway purports in his article is to avoid caffeine and lists it as a diuretic. Recent research passed on by Dr. Mirkin points to caffeine being an aid in training rather than a hindrance. Caffeine blocks pain receptors and allows one to go longer than normal and does not act as a diuretic during intense exercise. This was proven in a study that Dr. Mirkin mentions in one of his articles that he passed on in his e-zine. Personal anecdotal evidence comes in the form of 7 attempts at 100 miles on the bike completed last year during the Summer in the intense heat of the Southwest US. Exercising beyond my capabilities often causes my back to ache. Over the course of these attempts I found that taking in caffeine either in the form of an iced coffee or diet coke every thirty miles or so allowed me to to work at levels higher than normal. Eventually I was able to complete the distance in 5:46 minutes. No it's not a pro-time done in less than 5 hours, but it is less than 6 and acceptable.

Bobster, Roadie in South Texas

Isn't this not normal? Someone mentioned to me recently I may be flushing out my electrolytes. Should I just start sipping a ports drink or electrolyte replacement in order to get things in balance. Ive felt really sick after come of my workouts too especially if over heated. ..and wonder if it's sue to lack of potassium, chloride, and sodium.

When did Soda Become Our Water?

During the run our conversation turned to the subject of drinking pop. A general consensus was many people drink soda as their only source of fluid. I found that really ironic, with all the commercials about bottled water.

Everywhere I go I see bottled water. I thought that everyone drank water. But then again I am not everyone.

I was told that people think that it is ok to just drink pop because; there is water in soda pop. Well yes there is water, I must agree. What about carbonated water and sugar that are also added to soda. I just don?t believe that soda is as good for you as drinking water. What did they do before the invention of soda pop? Those poor cavemen only had water to drink.

Is it the sugar in pop that causes an addiction? I think that there is a comforting good feeling when people drink soda. Like having a treat with every time that a drink is taken.

I wonder if it?s the super sizing of all the fast food restaurants that have helped people become so addicted to pop. Or all the free refills that eating establishment?s offer.

Then I was told that people do not like the taste of water. This I can understand because I add lemon to the water that I drink a lot of the time. Does this make me just like a soda pop consumer?

I guess the whole point of all this ranting is that I was totally shocked to watch someone drink about a gallon of pop when eating supper. This same person describing in great detail to me how they wanted to be a great runner. The only thing that needed to be changed was to eat better. I found that so amazing. I guess that does not make anyone?s dream any less important because they drink a lot of soda pop.

I tried to explain why water is so important to this person. After a few sentences I realized that life only teaches words do not. I wonder if this needs to happen for all those in this world who want to do things their way.

Does anyone have a good nutritional plan for before, during, and after an ironman event. I've been talking to alot of people and experimenting with different plans, but is there a certain calorie/hour consumption rule set in stone that I should follow.
