Do you ever feel that skinny runners look at you differently?

hey everyone! i'm nikki. i've been running since Feb. of this year. I'm about 192 (down 26 pound since November woot!) and I race at like 12-MM. (i've done 3 5ks in the past 3 months and i'm training for a HM)

At each race I've been asked by the bigger gals if I'm walking too. Is it because I'm a big girl that they don't think I can run? I have improved greatly and I know speed will come with weight loss. I just don't get why they think bigger girls don't run. I usually pass a few people that go all balls out and realize they didn't train properly for the 5k and I know it ticks them off that they got beat by a big girl in a skirt.

I just am so dishearted by the fact that because of my size i'm not "accepted" into the runners world.

So am I the only woman that feels this way?

----

Nikki :)

Nobody puts baby in the corner!

Hey guys, teen runner here!

I found these forums and this one in particular, and I'd like to share a story with all of you ending with a question I'd like to ask !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|border=0!. I am a 15 year old girl and I weigh about 190 pounds. I had noticed in gym class that when I ran, I was slow, but I didn't mind running too much. I had meant to join cross country that year in high school (my 9th grade), but I got scared because I'd heard stories of the huge amount of miles that they run and how fast everyone was. I was scared that they'd make fun of me for being slow because I used to get teased all the time in gym class for being one of the slowest, and so I didn't join that year. Over the summer into 10th grade my mom persuaded me to join, coaxing me, because she thought it would be a good experience and give me some exercise. I finally joined, scared and.. it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made. The girls on the team were so friendly, and even though I was the slowest on the team by a good amount, I was never treated any differently. At the meets, people wouldn't turn away in disgust or point and laugh like in gym class where everyone else was, but actually cheer me on and tell me to keep going, and I even that I was respected for joining the team, something I have not felt in a long time. I regret not joining last year, there is something about running miles and going through pain that bonds you with your teammates, and I felt so good after finishing the season, I was so proud that I did it, that I gave it my all, and survived some of those "killer" runs up huge hills. My mile time went from a 10:00 to a 9:00, and I lost about 10 pounds from cross country. My question is, I would like to get even faster, because cross country has really inspired me to run harder and faster.

I was wondering, how much could I run, because now I really want to break 8:00 in the mile and get down to a good slim weight. I don't think I will do track this year, I feel like I am not ready for that since it is about speed, and my mile times don't seem sufficient =/. I want to do it next year if I can break 8:00, I view breaking 7 as something crazy, but anything is possible right?

Thanks if you read all of the above, I would appreciate some good advice on any type of training schedule and I can provide more information is needed. Thanks!

Anyone out there get moody while distance training?

Hi Everyone...this is my first time doing this, so I apologize for any major errors! I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer for anywhere on the web, so I thought maybe someone here might know. My husband is currently training for a Marathon in November. He has reached the point where he is starting to get into longer distances; last weekend's long run was 13 miles. He has recently become very moody. He's gotten very grouchy and sometimes just downright mean. Is this normal? Has anyone else had experience with this? He trained for a half marathon earlier in the year and I noticed the same thing then but i thought that might have just been a one-off thing. Apparently it is not...any way to combat this or make it better? Thanks for any advice you can give me!

I run too, by the way...just so you all don't think I'm the evil, non-running spouse

Age, Weight, Sex handicap calculator

Here's an interesting web site that attempts to compute a handicap time for heavier runners.

http://academic.udayton.edu/PaulVanderburgh/weight_age_grading_calculator.htm

There are dozens of age grading calculators on the net but this is one that tries to work in an equivalence for weight. I plugged in my latest 5K, 27:29 which doesn't sound too impressive on the surface, but when I include age 61 and wt 202 lbs, it gives me a 19:53. File it under "in your dreams", but it's a fun exercise.

Try this one for plain age grading, excluding any consideration of weight, based on the world record for each age. It brings you down to earth a bit but still a very good tool to see where you sit in the global scheme of things.

http://www.heartbreakhill.org/age_graded.htm

Journey of a Thousand Miles...

My wife and I are working on the C25K program and are starting our third week of it...but we're still on the week 1 regiment. I'm a former athlete but am woefully out of shape so its coming along slowly but surely. My wife is in better shape but she's not real athletic. Even so, she's smoking me now.

Yep, 6'1" 326 (as per my last Dr. visit) type 2 diabetic with high BP and high Cholesteral. My ideal weight is 222lbs according to a doctor a while back. I have a long, uphill climb ahead of me. I haven't been in anything approximating good shape since college and I'm 34 now....and I was always a 'fat kid'. for about 3 years, starting with the summer after my senior year in high school and my first couple of years of college, I got into pretty good shape. it went alright for a while but once I got out of school and got married, it slowly started to erode. The last four years have been really awful with very little physical activity despite having many opportunities at my disposal.

I credit my wife and some friends for this getting me moving. The C25K struck a nerve with my wife as she has participated in http://ww5.komen.org/ the last few years (Her mother is a breast cancer survivor) but she doesn't want to just walk, she wants to run it. So....here we go.

Specifically, I am having issues with tightness and cramping in my legs. I have at various times in the past been heavily into weight lifting...I played HS football and it stuck with me and as a result, I have alot of muscle in my legs. Hefting around this amount of weight requires it anyhow. I feel like I've gotten 'my wind' and breathing isn't an issue like it was on day 1. I can go until my legs start to lock up.

Reading some things here reminded me that a while back, my doctor suggested I take a potassium supplement to counteract my cholesteral and BP meds. I think that's what is causing the cramping and tightness in the legs.....well, at least part of it. So, hopefully, that will help some.

The bottom line is I really could care less about running a race or the whole running thing in general. Its about fitness for me and its something I have done (err...a long time ago) and effective to meet my fitness goals. It allows me to set a goal and shoot for it knowing it is working toward any other fitness goals I may have. I will probably add in some light at first weight training as I go and we're going to the gym tonight for the first time(for me) in 2+ years. We've been running the track at the local HS and a park near by these two weeks and will continue. So tonight, though we are two weeks in, will be a chance to weigh in and make an official start to things.

Anyhow...I'm glad I found this site and I've already found some valuable information. Wish us luck!

opinions on qualifications for Athena/Clydesdale categories

As a runner that can typically qualify to run as an Athena I have to wonder how the qualifications were decided and set on the 'weight' categories; and how those entering and running within them feel about this way of trying to level the playing field for prize categories.

I am what I (and most that know me) consider fairly thin and very fit ... yet, since I hang out in the 150's aside from peak training periods, I could run in the Athena weight category if I chose to do so. I never have and don't think I would, I do just fine in the open category as do some other gals I know from racing that could also enter in weight categories. I do outweigh most of the frontrunners by quite a hefty bit and it is a handicap for my times but not what I'd consider the reasoning behind the spirit of setting up such categories.

I've read a few of the threads here and I think it would be highly frowned upon by most if somebody like myself snatched a coveted prize set aside for those that are overweight to some extent.

So, I suppose I am really asking if most feel these categories are meant for those keeping fit while being overweight or trying to lose weight, OR if they are meant for anybody that is not a petite waif of a person?

I hope this isn't offensive ... I don't mean it to be ... I have competed well in some races and been pushed and often beaten by folks that 'appear' to be in less fit shape than myself - I know extra weight don't always mean less fit, believe me ... and sometimes I find I just have to look at the awards ceremony and find out if they entered open or weight category and am always curious how each runner makes that decision.
