Why We Hate Charity

Glen here, bike tour director.

Well... we don’t really hate charity.

In fact, I think it’s important to leave money behind with local charities wherever we pedal because if we come through your town we want to thank you for hosting us, and because we want to be welcomed back next year.

This is also the reason we try to buy our supplies locally whenever possible.

Cool.

I’ve been lucky enough to work on bike events with some really great non-profits -- Leukemia Team In Training, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Greenport NY Fire Department, Transportation Alternatives, the American Red Cross, Westhampton Presbyterian Church, a scholarship fund at UMass (just one of my alma maters), the Lynbrook NY Fire Department, and many many more. All good people, all fun to work with, and all deserving of our support. Please help them when you can.

BUT...

I don’t understand why every bike ride has to be a charity fundraiser.

As I put together my rides I am often asked by people I meet along the way, “What’s this ride for?” and I want to say, “Umm... it’s for having fun?”

Apparently this is not an acceptable answer.

(That line of questioning is usually accompanied by this one: “OK, but what’s your REAL job?” and I don’t know whether to stand tall or look embarrassed when I say, “This IS my real job!”)

Somewhere along the line it became a bad thing to sell cycling entertainment, and I don’t know why.

We have good friends who hate group rides and would rather pedal the roads alone for free, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. Our local bike clubs offer free rides and that’s terrific.

And we know some wonderful people who raise thousands of dollars for good causes whenever they pedal. We are blessed to have them among us. (By the way, I have discovered that the sort of person who can raise $5,000 for a bike ride is often incredibly charismatic or incredibly annoying...)

But I think that you should be able to buy cycling entertainment at a fair price without also having to raise a lot of cash for charity. Charity rides are great, but can’t cycling and philanthropy be two separate events some days?

When I pay to be entertained at the movies, a concert, or a sporting event, I never say, “Wait a minute... before I buy this ticket, what charity is the money going to?”

No; I want to have some fun, and I’m willing to pay for it. My money goes to Sony Pictures or TicketMaster and I accept that as a part of the bargain for good or ill.

I work hard on my rides to provide you with some fun, and I charge a price that I believe is a good value. Part of that ride fee always includes money that we give to local charities, for all of the fine reasons mentioned above.

Another portion of the ride fee goes right in to my pocket and is used for exorbitant luxuries such as sleeping indoors in the wintertime. (I earn about as much as an assistant manager at McDonald’s, but I love what I do. I mention this only because at one recent ride a friendly cyclist said to me, “Really? I estimated that you were making about $400,000 a year.” Sigh.)

Years ago The Wall Street Journal had an article about someone who had studied philosophies from around the world to try to discover the meaning of life. The best that scholar could come up with was, “Our purpose in life is the creation and consumption of entertainment.”

I’m not sure I fully agree, but I get the point...

SO...

Please continue to donate to your favorite charities.

Please continue to have fun riding your bike.

Sometimes those two things happen on the same day.

And sometimes they don’t.

Glen/president

BICYCLE SHOWS U.S.

www.bicycleshows.us

WOMENS RIDE on Mondays in Birmingham, Michigan. (start one in your town!)

Here in the Detroit area, even though I'm

gender compromised, I started a women's ride on Monday evenings which

serves well as a cool down/recovery ride for the racer types and a nice

"learn to" ride for some newer riders or riders with a recreational

bent. 6:30 pm start times from Barnum Park in Birmingham, MI is a

convenient location for many. We go about 16 to 23 miles depending on

weather and sunset times and with some newspaper coverage in the

Detroit Free Press we've had up to 60 riders join in. I suggest this in

other communities as there has been a great demand for this ride. Many

women don't know where to go and need some first time instruction and

support. We usually do a modest clinic at the start and a yoga/stretch

cool down at the finish.

In addition we created a yahoo group, o2WomensRide@yahoogroups.com,

which has served well for the participants to send out notices of other

rides they are doing at local parks or women's bikes for sale and so

on!

www.riders4research.com for more info.

EJ Levy

Temporary Ride Leader!
