What do you like to sail?

I have spent the majority of my time sailing on sunfish boats and really enjoy it. They are small and relatively easy to sail. We used to actually enjoy capsizing them and scrambling to turn the boat back over, which is probably not the best idea, but we were young and probably dumb. I don't recommend doing this so please don't come to me when you capsize your boat on purpose and it sinks to the bottom. Lasers are on the top of my list too. I also enjoyed the Flying Scot sailboats we used to take out. They are bigger and a completely different experience. The sunfish is less stressful in my opinion.

As some may know, I was recently in Florida blogging about the winning streak that the Soozal Sailing team took part in. This amazing 3-win sweep on the East Coast and 2K ocean miles just won Dan Woolery, captain and owner of Soozal (a.k.a. my “Dad”) a nomination of +Sailor of the month in Seahorse magazine (top rated International Sailing magazine).

So there is an awesome event coming up February 20-21 at Wright State; Five Rivers Outdoors is hosting the Adventure Summit. This event will be a fun time for anyone who is interested in learning about outdoor activities. Also you will be able to watch and participate in some cool competitions.

Activities include presentations and workshops, a bouldering competition, a kayaking competition, a snowboarding competition, possibly an indoor triathlon, and party with the pros. Even Polar Explorer Ann Bancroft will be there! (She was the first woman to cross the ice to both the North and South poles.)

(It is all free except for the bouldering competition!)

I learned to sail on a small boat and moved up in the rankings so to speak as my sailing experience and knowledge grew. I started off on a boat that looked like a bath tub with a sail then moved on to sunfish as a beginner. I just did what my sailing camp told me to do, but do you think its better for a beginner learning to sail to start off on a small boat and learn by doing or on a larger boat to watch and learn?

What do you use as a power source? I've read some interesting stuff on solar panels but I'm not sure if they'd work on a sailboat. Anyway, I'm curious what is out there to use or possibly even what combinations of power sources people are using?

New Years Resolutions for 2008

The New Year is quickly approaching and its time to start getting our New Years Resolutions for 2008 together so we can kick them off on January 1. What are your resolutions for this year?

In 2008 I am going to....

1 - Get on a schedule for going to yoga classes (which will also help my back and allow me to be more active)

2 - Do one new thing (restaurant, sport, activity, museum, etc.) a month

3 - Run in at least 10 events for good causes

4 - Encourage my friends and family to get active with me

5 - Start bringing my lunch to work more often

6 - Cut back on eating fish tacos...I'm addicted and it is not okay to eat them as often as I do

So that is my list...the first two in bold are the most important to me and I will NOT flake on them.

The purpose of this event is to showcase a new format for Youth Sailing in a fun, unorthodox, and loosely competitive style. Results are not nearly as important as everyone having a good time sailing. Don’t expect conventional round the buoys racing or normal 1-2-3 prizes. Capsizes, freestyle, and fun will be required. If you are a hard-core racer with rule book in hand, this event may not be for you. If you want to just have fun and pioneer a new chapter in Youth Sailing….. game on!

The 505 Class has been making a regular migration to the Gorge each summer for many years. 2008 will feature their biggest regatta in North America as a part of the Gorge Games, the 505 North American Championships. Many of the best sailors in the 505 Class will be in attendance, battling it out in a series of races to see who is top dog in the Gorge.

International 505

The International 505 is certainly a powerful boat that demands a great deal, physically and mentally, both from helm and crew. In return, it provides a challenging, exhilarating, and breathtaking performance along with a balance of power and control that is unique. The 505 is a truly International Class, having raced in a least eighteen countries. Leading helmsmen from other classes quickly find out how difficult it can be to rise to the top, most thrive on the challenge and persevere.
