Change the foot fault rule

don't you think that changing the foot fault to a FOOT LET is a good idea? The foot fault called at a critical point in the match is just horrible. Nobody steps so far into the court that it gives them an advantage and I think calling a fault especially on second serve penalizes the server too much. A foot let still prevents the server from stepping on the line and getting away with it but without full penalty. Situations such as occurred in the Open would never happen if the foot let was the rule.

While we are at it, let's finally eliminate the net let. The vast majority of net lets penalize the server more than the receiver which is as it should be, so let's not let the server get a do over.

Tennis elbow treatment, proven to be 90% effective

I am a tennis player and have also been a sports physical therapist in practice for 20 years. Throughout that time, I have seen alot of treatments come and go for tennis elbow, and I think the medical field is finally figuring out how to manage this problem. We used to think that the pain was caused by inflammation in the tendons surrounding the elbow, and that treatments to decrease inflammation through rest, bracing, medication and cortisone shots would help. (Which it did sometimes, but not consistently and permanently). As medical imaging has improved, we can now see that most of the time, the problem is not due to inflammation, but to degenerative changes within the tendon. As a result of repetitive strain, the body tries to heal itself, but it does so in an inferior manner. Healthy tendon tissue can be replaced by scar tissue, which is weaker and is more prone to future problems. Even the blood vessels are different in degenerative tendons, not delivering healing blood products to the deep portions of the tendon. There are several treatments being performed and researched that use the preceding facts as thier base. One of these techniques is performed by certified physical therapists and is called ASTYM. Practitioners use special instruments to identify and treat the dysfunctional tissue described above. The second and very important part is that the patient must perform stretching and (usually eccentric) strengthening exercises so that the tendon fibers heal in a linear, organized and strong fashion. Certified therapists can be found across the country and should be getting the 90% success rate I quoted above. I have treated my own patients with ASTYM for over 4 years and have been getting great results, especially with my tennis players.

Tennis Pros on Twitter

Now there's a better way to follow the tennis pros.

TennisTweets.com is an aggregation of Twitter feeds from select pro players on the ATP and WTA tours. You can follow Andy Murray as he makes his road trip to the U.S. Open. Or check in with Serena Williams from one of her many daily tweets.

Some of the more active tennis tweeters include: Amer Delic, Justin Gimelstob, Andy Roddick, Serena Williams, Venus Williams, the Bryan brothers and Andy Murray.

Partly from the innate independence of the sport and partly because officials haven't really caught on yet, tennis players have free run on sending tweets. Some tweet on-court, on the road, in airports or at social events.

And there's usually plenty of juicy gossip.

Check it out: http://www.tennistweets.com/

How to Minimize dumping to keep a lower ranking

In our USTA league dumping to keep a lower ranking is a common practice. However the USTA does not seem interested in reducing dumping. In one year the team captain of a team that was specifically created with players that were at least 2 levels above the 3.5 rating to win the national championship. The captain personally told me that the team was organized to go to the national and have a chance at winning the championship. He said that everyone was doing it so he was doing it too. Their strategy was to win 3 matches per week and have the team member lose the other 2 matches to keep their rating at 3.5. And even for the individual matches they would control the sets such that they would win the set but lose a certain amount of games to keep their rating at 3.5. This happen to me where the player would win 2 games then lose the next game by double faulting on their service to lose and keep it close and continue till they won. The team went on to win the national 3.5 championship.

I play in another non-USTA league and the points to select teams for the playoffs is based on the number of matches won. This makes it more difficult to dump games if one wants to get to the playoffs. This will not stop dumping but it would make it more difficult to dump if a team wants to remain competitive. I wish the USTA would consider using total matches won and loss. Having a team win 3 of 5 matches to get 1 point towards the teams ranking facilitates dumping after your team wins 3 matches.

Also, don't talk to me about the inequity of the USTA ratings. That's another subject.

Your comments are welcomed.

FREE tennis educational network with images of the top players to facilitate more self-learning possibilities

With http://www.MyTennisWorld.net we offer an absolutely FREE educational social tennis network where hundreds of photos and dozens of videos of the top pro players are presented, most of them with my technical comments. You can see a wide variety of examples of all the tennis strokes where some of them can be considered as ideal, some average and some rather wrong. These examples should help you while working on your game. Each member can also submit one video footage of his/her stroke for a free stroke analysis. At the picture attached below here, you can see one example - Dinara Safina (RUS, from a doubles match at the 2008 French Open) is looking away from the ball / impact zone before she strikes the ball during most of her serves. This is in my opinion the main reason for her not very stable serve. Some of you might remember the 2008 Olympic final where Safin lost in 3 sets to Elena Dementieva. In this final match, Safina commited 17 double faults!!! So, looking at the picture below (click at the attachement), you might see one of the main reasons why she (Safina) lost that Olympic final in Beijing....

What a shame for her that she was not taught right. There are many more interesting facts to be discovered at http://www.MyTennisWorld.net - for example how does Dinara's brother Marat Safin (RUS) handle his eyes during the serve.. What do you expect..?

Junior tennis instruction photos added to MyTennisWorld.net

You can see that even juniors under 10 years of age can well learn and produce strokes using the same biomechanical principles like adult pro players.

Here at this photo from a junior tournament match MBTA player Fabian (*1999) showes very solid serve with full pronation as well as excellent shoulder axis and gleno-humeral joint angle.
