Can walkers compete in any half/full marathon?

On some website I saw something talking about marathons that allow racewalking.... it made it seem like other marathons you can't walk in, but since the list of marathons listed was so small, that didn't seem right... I saw another thread on this site where lots of people posted lots of marathons they walked in, so I assume you can walk in any half/full marathon. I'm a newbie, ex-runner w/ bad knees, so I'm trying to see what potential races/types of races I should set my sights on. THANKS!
