Reporter seeking training info: cold weather

Hello everyone,

I'm a reporter from the University of Florida doing a feature on training for marathons in cold weather and I was wondering if any marathoners in the northern states would be willing to let me interview them about how cold-weather training differs from normal training. If you're wondering why someone in Florida is asking about cold weather, well, it's part of a much larger project about how the body reacts differently in different weather conditions.

Even if you don't want to be formally interviewed (by phone or email), feel free to throw out tips, as I've never run more than a mile at a time in my life and I could use all the help I can get.

If you do want to be interviewed, email me at taylorprovost@ufl.edu and we'll set something up.

Thanks,

Taylor Provost

University of Florida College of Journalism and Communications

Has anyone used the FIRST marathon training program?

I'm training for my second marathon and am thinking of using the FIRST

program. It was featured in Runner's World a few years ago. I'm

wondering if anyone has used it and if so, what your experience was.

Briefly, the program calls for 3 "quality" training runs per week

(speed work, a tempo run, and a long run -- with paces and mileage

specified) as well as two medium-to-hard-effort cross training

workouts. I had difficulty maintaining higher mileage and 5-6 days of

running in my initial marathon training, and this appeals to me as a

way to add some variety and avoid injury. I'm somewhat apprehensive,

though, of running only 3 days per week during training.

Thanks for any input!

I live north of Boston and am considering renting a campsite up in the White Mountains of New Hampshire in late sept/early oct.

p.s: my first marathon

                                                                                Paul
