Wanting to stay fit with an extreme budget

I am very new to pretty much everything. After highschool I didn't play much sports just because life didn't really allow it. Earlier in 07 I gained over 30 pounds in a three month period and it wasn't until I stopped drinking soda, and began working at JCP that I finally lost some of that weight. I live in a very rural area, and all I have to workout with is a jumprope, treadmill, and me. I have no money to go to the nearest gym, twenty minutes away(especially with gas prices), but I need to figure out the best plan for me right now at my current state. I way about 174 and I am 5'8". I want to tone out my body and stay fit, because I feel extremely out of shape. I can only do a maximum of twenty pushups in one set, then I just start doing less and less. Because I feel so out of shape and my endurance level is low, I feel extremely unconfident and never finish anything I start. Lately I have been gradually gaining weight even though I am not eating as much.

lol I know this is a lot for a first post, but let me know what you think I could do for myself. I am getting married and moving soon so anything that needs to be bought is a no go.

God bless and thanks guys!

P.S. The pic of me in my profil was from 06, I am about 20 something pounds bigger.

I have done some weight training with my own body before like push-ups and sit-ups etc. I am hoping to do that again. Does anyone know of some books that would be good references for me to do these types of exercises?

TIA

Looking for simple "Biggest Loser" type group challenges, any suggestions?

We are starting up a "Biggest Loser" type weight loss challenge at our gym. Setting up for two teams. We need to set up some activities where the teams can compete either head to head or singly. Because of varied work schedules time is an issue. We are looking for physical challenges as well as nutritional. Has anyone set up one of these contests? Any resources you can suggest? Each team will have a personal trainer as a team leader. We are also trying to work out how to select teams and how to set up a scoring system. We want the weight loss to be the primary way of scoring but also earn points for cardio and resistance workouts and nutritional knowledge. We have access to a local park and school with track on weekends. We also have an assortment of equipment, free weights, cones, hula hoops, etc.. We are looking at a 12 week program. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Core strength

Here is some more info:

I have been running for 2 years - I am trying to build myself up for a half-marathon next year. I am 49 and have not been athletic AT ALL my whole life. But I just love running. I'm at the 10-12 km long run once/week and 2 or 3 7km runs each week stage.

I had a stress fracture last year and am having some difficulties with my piriformis now - everything happens on my left side. A physiotherapist said that my gluteus medias (sp?) is weak on that side. I have been given some exercises but they don't relate to my core, just this muscle.

I want to be able to run until I'm 80 and I wonder if there is a way to improve my core strength.

Thanks!
Ruth
