What or Who determines "Rec", "Select" or "Elite" status other than choice?

My question is, who determines whether a team is "Recreational", "Select", or "Elite"? If anyone can throw a title on a team name and jersey without proving themselves before hand, then why even classify? Show me a clear-cut definition of what classifies any team to be deemed more than a rec league team and the source of reference so that I can research it.

I guess my ideology would be that in order to rise amongst the ranks, there should be a certain amount of wins that have to be achieved in order to declare one's team such a status and not just stating that one is "Select" or "Elite" because a coach wants to.

Don't get me wrong, there are some teams that deserve their status and live up to it by the way that they play, but so many do not.

All I've really seen is that the status title is good for donations and sponsorships more than anything.

If your team lives up to it, I give you mad props.

Others simply perpetrate.

Hey all,

I love basketball. I always have.

Being around 30 as I am, you start looking to do something more meaningful with your life. For me it always comes back to coaching. I think it's time to impart my love of the game and my knowledge on to a younger generation.

The problem is, I have no idea where to start. If any coaches out there have any advice on how to get goin', I would welcome any advice.

Practice Plans

I currently coach two teams at my local YMCA, a 1st and 2nd grade team and a 5th and 6th grade team. For my younger team I spend a majority of the practice on skills using drills from various resources. For that age group, I'm comfortable knowing that this is by far the most important thing to work on with my players. I try to keep the practice fun and vary activites as much as possible. We usually end each practice with a scrimmage where we reinforce rules of the game and skills developed during practice.

For my 5th/6th grade team I also like to spend time on skills but I'm having a problem balancing it with trying to teach them to play as a team, move without the ball, and look to pass when their shot is contested. The Y runs a fall and winter season and my fall team went 0-10-1 because the person running the league was new and didn't equally distribute the talent amongst the teams. We only practice one hour per week as per league rules and I need some suggestions to improve our team offense so I dont have to subject my son to another long losing season. I would like to teach them some motion offense concepts but here is my scenario. I have 3 decent "bigs" including my son. I also have 3 guards who are ok but tend to dribble up and force shots. We have to play everyone an equal amount of time and I have 2 players who make me nervous every time they touch the ball. I have 8 players on my team and we practice in a half gym with one hoop so any drills I run I have to include almost everyone in some fashion so they are not standing around. We have 9 games left and my goal is to win at least 3 or 4 and improve the skills of my players. I have used some 5v3 no dribbling drills in the past to emphasize movement and passing but I'm always looking for something new.

Coaches, Finger rolls. Please provide your insight

I currently coach kids ages 11-14 for multiple AAU & super league teams. My focus is strongly on building the fundamentals for the kids so they are ready for Prep. From some of my players I hear of previous coaches who repeatedly and adamantly berate their young players for finishing with a finger roll. While I have played/taught/coached for long enough to know that a finger roll is a lower percentage shot, and while I recognize that it has disadvantages. I am curious if I am doing my players a disservice by allowing them to continue to work on their finger roll shot's along with their reverse layups, power layup's, LH layups, RH layups, etc. Some of my more skilled decision makers are able quite successfully to create offense and finish in the lane using the finger roll in certain situations.

I have no strong feelings either way, but I am always open to learning, so I am interested in learning if I am doing a disservice to my 12-13 yr players by allowing them to create and finish in the appropriate situation with a finger roll? Should I be discouraging this? If so, at what age should they develop these skills? I guess to this point I have allowed this because I believe that if they have the aptitude, that the earlier they begin developing offensive & defensive techniques the better. I guess I look at it like teaching good 3/4 pass denial defense. While I would discourage over playing the passing lane 95% of the time, there is also a time and place to allow them to make the steal.

Parks and Rec Draft ideas?

Hi Coaches,

I am coaching a local parks and rec team this winter and we are conducting a draft this week. We already evaluated the players based on a scale from 1-5 and just need to find a way to make equal teams. What would be the best way to hold a draft if there are 5 teams and around 50 players? We will obviously allow fathers to coach their sons and honor any other legitimate requests. Thanks in advance!
