Hi team,

My name is Kelly Emo and I'm new to the team.  I'm currently training to do my first Escape from Alcatraz triathon.  I'm excited and a bit nervous about the 1.5 mile bay swim.   Last week, I participated in the Morgan Hill (a.k.a. Uvas) triathlon and the week before the Angels Camp triathlon to get the cobwebs out and see where I need to focus.  The answer is swimming and more swimming!

I'm planning to do as many cold water open water swims between now and June 14th as my schedule will allow.  I'm hoping to swim in Aquatic Park on this Sunday May 24th after the DSE runners Golden Gate Vista 10k run.   I'm also thinking of doing a mid-week swim at Coyote point after work one evening...  Anyone know of any groups or plans for open water swimming coming up over the next three weeks?

Also, anyone doing the See Jane Run 1/2 marathon or 5k on May 30th in Alameda?  I may do the 5k and go swimming at Fremont Quarry Lakes afterwards.

Hey everyone. My name's Jennifer Hampson & I'm new to the team. My next event is in less than 2 weeks... the 2009 California AIDS Ride. This will be my 4th experience w/ AIDS Ride & it's a life changing experience each & every time. We will be cycling 545 miles from San Francisco to L.A. to raise funds & awareness for the cause.

A) Is anyone else doing this event?, and B) Does anybody know someone who may be interested in hosting a house guest for one night in L.A. (on 6/6) before I fly home? I would prefer not to have to get a hotel room if I can avoid it. We finish in the Brentwood area. I'm a low-maintenance guest & love meeting new people.

Why not run from the mountains down to the beach? Check out the Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail, which connects Skyline Blvd (Hwy 35) to the Pacific Ocean (Waddell Beach). Despite unreliable and inconsistent distance markers, I'm pretty sure it is about 30 miles each way. And that's the key piece - while a one way (downhill) adventure, with a shuttle pick up, is a solid day, I highly recommend doing the return - down one day, back up the next. For the down and the up you can follow slightly different routes (more exposed or more in the Redwoods). And although there are a number of camping options, I recommend camping at Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Jay Camp. It has coin-operated showers that will put a smile on your face at the end of a long, long day of running.

I just did this last weekend. Since I was overnighting, I had to carry a backpack for my sleeping bag and an ample supply of food and water. Aquaphor ointment proved useful in dealing with the inevitable chafing.

I recommend ordering a trail map from Big Basin Redwoods State Park (hard to find anything of decent resolution and detail for free online). For more details on the hike, Or ask me.
