Now that our run here is coming to an end I wanted to sign off with a big thank you to the folks at Bear Naked and Active.  I think it is great that, particularly in these difficult economic times, forward thinking companies and individuals see value in sponsoring and helping out amateur athletes.  Please know that we do not take it for granted, it means a lot.  Here's to wishing you all great success in the future!  Cheers!

First Ultra marathon

Posted by Karl P Coleman Feb 18, 2009

31 mile/50K trail ultramarathon in the bag! It's rare these days that I get an opportunity to attempt an event or distance that is unknown to me. I was very lucky on many fronts. Even though it was very cold at race start (39 degrees!) it was a beautiful day, clear and crisp. Running along the ridge line of the McDowell Mountains at daybreak listening to the coyotes announce the morning was an amazing experience. For the first time ever I showed up late and missed a race start. When it was all said and done I started 12 minutes behind the field. Unfortunately the race was not chip timed. I caught the first (last) guy in the field about 8 minutes in and then it was a slow but steady progression through the field for the rest of the first 15.5 mile loop. I think because it was so cool out and the views were so distracting I really didn't pay enough attention to fueling and hydrating the first lap as I was also trying to make up for lost time. There were only two aid stations on the course and at the start/finish so there were far less "reminders" than a typical race. As a result I bonked HUGE between mile 16 and 21. At the first aid station on the second loop I jammed down some OJ, Coke, Pringles and M&M's. I did this again at the mile 25 aid station and as a result I finished pretty strong the last six miles (relatively speaking). My finish time was 4:55, so I just made it in under my self imposed 5 hour goal. This would have been good for 9th in AG had I started on time. I am most happy about my recovery. I immediately soaked my legs in ice cold pool water for about 20 minutes when I got home, took a steaming shower, and then put on the compression tights. Two easy sessions on the stationary bike, an easy swim on Sunday followed by some more easy bike sessions on Monday and a great massage left me feeling great with no adverse lingering conditions. Next up to tackle is the 50 miler, but probably not until next year.

January 18th, 2009 Arizona Rock n' Roll Marathon PR 3:27:28 Yesterday I kicked off the new race year on a positive note by posting a 6 min + PR with my first sub 3:30 marathon. The conditions were nearly perfect with the only exception being a bit of a nasty headwind at the worst possible time (miles 21 t0 24.5 on a slight up hill stretch). Other than that it was high 60's to mid 70's and sunny. It was nice to start off this way as all of my marathon's last year were a little disappointing, even the PR at NYC. My goal time that I wrote done before the start of the race was 3:27:30 so not only did I hit that time but I also hit my 10k, half marathon, and 20mi split goals. It was a nice steady day and hopefully a good spring board for my first Ultramarathon which is coming up February 14th in the McDowell Mountains. I hope that everyone on Team Bear Naked gets their race year off to a great start and I hope to see you all out there!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Posted by Karl P Coleman Nov 28, 2008

It's Friday morning and I, like a lot of you I suspect, am nursing my traditional turkey hangover.  The good news is that I got a huge training day in yesterday before the turkey rolled out and I have another one planned for today.  I wanted to jump on today and say congratulations to the Team Bear Naked members who raced Ironman Arizona last weekend.  I was visiting Phoenix for Thanksgiving and came out to the race to support a friend (that by the way set a PR on the day).  I was super pleased to see no less than three of the Team Bear Naked crew out flying the colors!  It looked like a perfect day for an Ironman.  In bouncing around the team website it looks like Seattle, Miami, and New York were the teams representing.  Enjoy your holiday!  You guys earned it for sure!

Cheers!

IMPERIAL BEACH, CA  (August 24, 2008)

Team Bear Naked-San Diego kicked off its 2008 race campaign with an impressive showing at the 20th Annual Imperial Beach Triathlon, hosted by the Imperial Beach Chamber of Commerce.  All three Team Bear Naked competitors posted top 10 results, with two podium finishes.  Brad Golden won the Men's 25-29 division, Kim McLaughlin finished 2nd among Women's Clydesdale, and Devin Reilly placed 9th in Men's 25-29.

This year's race events started much like last year's, with concern at the expo regarding bacteria levels in the water due to the course's proximity to the Tijuana Estuary. Like last year, rumors ran rampant that the race would be canceled. New this year was a buzz regarding a previously unseen team at the competition: Team Bear Naked!  Questions abounded on the team, the brand, the granola.  Brad, Devin and Kim fielded these as true brand ambassadors, spreading the word about Bear Naked's honest, wholesome approach to fueling the active lifestyle with great tasting granola and trail mix.  Note to area retailers: expect a run on Bear Naked products... after a couple tastes of the athletes' own Bear Naked Pacific Crest Trail Mix, many planned to search out the Bear Naked product line later that day.

Concerns on the water quality proved misplaced: tests showed bacteria levels were within limits, and the

race was held as planned.  The swim was a particularly physical one - while the surf was relatively light and the course a simple out, over and in, a cross current repeatedly pushed competitors into one another.  Undeterred, Team Bear Naked came out of the water strong, and cheers of "GO BEAR NAKED!!" were heard from several in the crowd.

The bike course consisted primarily of two clockwise loops around the Imperial Beach Naval Air Station to

the south. With only a few tight turns to negotiate, this flat, fast but occasionally windy airstrip course gave plenty of opportunity for speed, and Team Bear Naked utilized it fully.  The run course headed north through the US Naval Radio Station, where the gradual uphill proved no challenge to Team Bear Naked competitors.

Brad Golden lead the team with a time of 54:52, Devin Reilly finished with a time of 61:23, Kim McLaughlin finished with a time of 74:44.  Congratulations Team Bear Naked!
