Please excuse our mistake as we had a mixup with matching the winning photo with the person who submitted it for the October Snapshotz contest, presented by Aunt Jemima. Photos was still submitted by Traci Gerlach, only it was a different photo...this is the real "Zach Pitching" Congratulations!
So what happens when an essentially lazy person who needs to lose a large amount of work finds out there is a 1/2 marathon at Disney World the same month as her anniversary...AND...it is with the theme Wine and Dine? Well, I guess that person goes and buys a new pair of running shoes with the arguement that a new pair of shoes is cheaper than all the other money wasted on gyms and classes. Then, she finds the couch 2 5k program and walks out the door. That was about a month a...
A while ago, a few blog readers asked me how I started running. I spent a long time typing up a blog post addressing that question but it didn’t resonate. I think it had sound advice- slowly build up (I’d recommend starting with C25K , then a spring-training type program and then a marathon program ), listen to your body, rest is important, embrace your supports and ignore the naysayers. But the thing is, none of that is new information. People who want to be runners can go to A...
About six months ago, I wrote about Colorado passing a "cyclist's Bill of Rights." This bill was an attempt to clearly define cyclist's rights on the roadway. The major items included specifying a three-foot buffer zone for cars passing riders, allowing cyclists to use the full lane if the shoulder of the road was deemed unsafe and allowing car drivers to cross a double yellow line to pass cyclists. You would have thought that this would have gone a long way in easing the tensions betwee...
Oh my goodness! As soon as I started my first 60 second run calves started hurting. I knew this was common so I tried to run thru it. The pain lasted the entire run. I streched them out after i finished and the felt fine so I know its just getting off my butt pain and nothing serious. My biggest worry is that this may stop me from getting back out there and running. I will continue to stay focused on my goal of the 5K in February. I would like to run it in under 27 minutes but just to finish wi...
So as a long time bicycling fanatic, I had dreamed of going to the TDF for the last 30 years. Recovering from a crash (messed my shoulder up pretty good), and having some back problems, I thought '09 was the year. So a few weeks before the start of the tour, I started planning and decided Col de Romme/Columbierre (stage 17) through the final stage 21 in Paris was going to be my trip. I'd never been to France, and although I've traveled a fair amount overseas, I knew this...

Our last release was a big one for Active.com. We pushed out some long-awaited improvements to the site – some designed to make people happy, others search engines. Course Routes The inclusion of course routes on our event details pages has been a fixture on our roadmap for some time. Developing the functionality was never the issue. (The ActiveTrainer team has a fine route plotting mash-up in their arsenal.) Our challenge was attaining a critical mass of...
Three days into training and things are going great ! I started the week with two light 3.31 mile runs at a 9:04 and 9:09 mile pace respectively. This morning I went out for my long run and was able to run a strong 7 miles at a 9:03 mile pace. Best of all it was a comfortable, easy run. The funniest moment came when somewhere around mile 6.15 I noticed that my shoe lace had come untied...and my car key that was attached to it was gone. I started retracing my race with fears of having ...
Hello All! I wanted to take a second and thank everyone who read my blog over the last few months. Even though this will be my last post, my jouney is far from over. Over the last two months I saw myself go from struggleing to run 6 miles in 58 minutes to running 10 miles in 83 mintues. I can now run an entire long run (consisting of 10 or more miles) in under 8:30. A lot of work went into my training and it all paid off. Now, as I close this chapter, I open a whole new one. I am ...

The journey began a couple years and 167 pounds ago... I had enough of being the embarrassing dad for my wife and kids. There was nowhere to go but toward health... the other way was probable death, certain illness: high blood pressure, sleep apneia, asthma, high cholesterol, and frequent chest pains. I found that most every activity somehow involved food, the planning for food, or the hiding of food. I needed to get back in touch with my potential... I needed to get ha...
