I feel as you do. Life is short, so I say enjoy it. I find a slow run much more fun than a race, being happy is what it's all about.
... For me, miles is the way to go.. I never felt proud when I said- I got my mile to 9:30, but saying my long run is 6 miles...that makes me feel amazing.
I too can honestly say I feel better about the miles than the time. Today I am capable of an 8 minute mile but I'm reday to puke at the end and it isn't fun. At the end of 13 I might be tired but I'm not wasted by the effort and I feel like I've accomplished something big.
My daughter runs high school track and she can flat out smoke me in a mile run but she is in awe of my ability past 10k even though I run in the 10:30/mile range.When people tell me I'm not really a "runner" because of my slow times I simply ask them what they think a good time for themselves would be over say, a half marathon distance. They usually give me a really ambitious number qualified by a number of excuses of why they don't/can't. Enough said.
My goal is to finish 26.2. Obviously marathons are timed events so my goal has a a qualifier - not to be picked up by the sweeper! Who knows, maybe one day I'll have the desire to add a speed component, but not today.

We all (most all) deep down somewhere want to get faster whether it's a ultra, marathon, half ,10, or just a 400 or we would just walk?
I do! I used to be really obsessed with time when I started running, but no longer.
I'm an ultra runner now so my goal is mostly time on my feet over speed. I've actually found that my speed has also increased as my miles do, even though my focus isn't speed. This month I raced an ultra followed by a marathon the next day. I think that blows a fast time out of the water. Here are my thoughts on the experience:
Also, if running slower is more enjoyable, DO IT. I believe that having fun is really most important.
I started running seriously at a later age and I find that if I concentrate on running the distance rather than the time 3 times a week and just work in some speed work once a week I improve. The long slow work GENTLY strengthens the body and once a week I really give the cardio. I work full time so I can't afford to wear myself out training....or racing...got to be back at work on Monday. i do Half and Full Marathon and have done the goofy 1 1/2 twice, so this really works for some types of runners.
I'd rather run 8-10 miles without trying to lower my speed, than run 1 mile as fast as i can. I prefer the long runs and feeling no stress like there's a time I need to beat. But I do speedwork and tempo runs once a week because I'm still a beginner and want to improve my pace for my long runs. I cut 1:38 off of my pace (min/mi) in 2 months, so the necessary evil is worth it to me. I sweeten the speedwork by allowing myself to run it on a track at a local high school. I'm a trail runner so hills, rocks, boulders, branches are standard; it's a nice break to run fast without trip hazards.
I noticed that you tore your achilles tendon a couple of years ago. I have had a bad case of achilles tendonitis for over 2 1/2 years. I had to quit running about 8 months ago. I have tried physical therapy, laser treatments, massages, over night boot, etc... Nothing has helped. It just doesn't get any better. I'm very frustrated. I would be happy just to run regardless how slow it would be. How did you get over your achilles tear?
I'm a beginner too, just curious how do you do your speedwork?
I am a slow runner but I try hard to watch my form and finish strong. I mainly go by how I feel as to how fast I run.....I won't do speed work because its just that WORK.. so I have to be content with my slower pace which is between 10:30-11:30 but I'm just happier going long and strong. I run to maintain my weight and it works for me. Comparing myself to other people can get depressing so I try hard to just compete with myself.
I just started running about 2 months ago after a LOOONG break after getting out of the Navy. I am steadily pushing my distance upward (I hit 4 miles this week) and I find I enjoy myself so much more when I consider distance and pace more than speed. I like that I can keep a steady pace throughout my run, no matter how steep the hills I encounter - even if they are 10.5 to 11 minute miles. I have started doing some speedplay, but my goal is a half marathon by next spring not 1 mile in X number of minutes. None of my runner friends judge me based on my speed and they are all happy to know I am running. It's a sport that loves to be shared, and that makes me happy. There are competitive types out there who I'm sure will mock me for my speed, but I'm really good at shrugging, grinning and saying "I don't care." Do what makes you happy, do what gives you pride, and be proud of your accomplishments. Who cares how they compare to another? Stay happy, stay healthy and stay running.
Sorry to hear about your achillies tendonitis. I know how agonizing it can be to not be able to do what you love in running. The only thing I can say that I did that may have been helpful was I immediately had my leg put in a boot after the MRI, I chose a SPORTS physical therapist who had dealt with active individuals getting back to running and last but not least, I took everything VERY slow. I was terrified of re-rupting my achillies so I babied it as much as possible during the first month. One thing I did do even with the boot on was ride my bike. I figured that since I had to ride a bike during therapy, it should be fine outside. This gave me exercise that I normally wouldn't have gotten with the boot on and probably helped to strengthen the muscle a little quicker. Even after the boot came off, I didn't even attempt to run for another 3 - 4 months.
I wish I knew what to tell you but it sounds like you have tried quite a few things. If you haven't done it , try meeting with a SPORTS physical therapist and letting them know that you are trying to get back to running. One thing I read when I had my achillies tear was that sometimes regular therapist are only interested in you getting the injured leg functional for everyday life but not physical activities. The other thing I would look into is to see if there isn't some other problem with your leg beside the achillies tendonitis.

I am a penguin. I am sometimes the one being escorted in by the remaining police officers. I have been running since June 2010, and I am proud to say I CAN finish a HM. It took me 3 hours but I finished. And, every other week or so, I finish a 10K. Or a 5K. And, a 10K night run on the sand. I will never be the fastest, but my name will always be on the results as a finisher..
There will always be someone faster no matter what. So, be happy with what you can do, and do it well..

I like this post because I'm new to running and I am VERY slow. In fact, when I see other slow runners report they are running at 10mm, I smile, because my best has been 13mm. LOL! However, I give myself some slack. I just started in February of this year and I find that I do enjoy just being out in nature pushing myself to run more distance. And, without even really trying I have progressed from 16mm to an average of 14mm. I'd like to run a little faster just so that I don't have the panic of the crew cleaning up the finish line before I get there. But for now, I'm enjoying this new journey. I have wanted to be a runner for many years but was too scared and embarrased to try. Now, I'm learning that this activity is very personal and my progress will be the result of whatever continues to make it enjoyable for me. I want to keep running because it is so soothing to move through the natural environment while enjoying beautiful music. I also find that since I've started running, I am more fierce in my tennis matches.
My goal is to one day run a marathon. It seems such a far-ranging goal, but a couple of years ago I never thought I would run a 10K either. Now, I'm desperately scanning Active.com to find the next one. They are addictive.
I run because I never thought I could. I'm a new penguin and I'm loving it!

I really enjoy running. I posted a thread a long time ago asking if people actually ran for the enjoyment and not just to lose weight or for exercise yet they didn't really like it. I guess I kind of run for both, but my focus depends on what I'm running. I was training for a half but I'm not going to be able to run the half because it was full before my team leader got our entries in. I ran 10 miles on my treadmill in an hour and a half or thereabouts and probably could have kept running another hour, which would have given me about... 16 miles total, but my treadmill shut off! The farthest I've run right now is 10 miles, but as long as I pace myself via a treadmill, I could probably keep going for a long time.
When I start running, even for a shorter training run, the first 2 miles, or about 15-20 minutes is a pain in the rear, I start feeling great right past the 2 mile mark usually, which is why I'm learning that longer races are a better idea. A 10K, 12K, or half are probably my best options, I also enjoy distance relays (ie Ragnar) where you run more but in legs. The legs I ran in my past one were all almost 10K each legs. I don't think you're strange at all, distance runners are just a different breed I guess. I figure when I finally DO run a half, I'm going to try to pace to about 6 miles an hour, I can run that comfortably on a treadmill and have plenty of 'gas in the tank'. It's much different than running a 5K where I'm speeding out of the start like I'm being chased like a rabid dog . I can keep that up for 3 miles, no way I could do it for 13.
