Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Welcome harmonie!  You are in great company.  I'm a newbie to all this too, and just now after a few months of just walking I am starting to add in 1 minute running segments.  And I've made it thru a bunch of 5ks (not always last) just by walking.  I am giving the "run your butt off" plan a try - it's very similar if not the same as Couch but it intertwines nutrition and running.  It says to walk until you can comfortably do 30 minutes at a time and then start to add 1 minute of running after every four minutes of walking and to go slow - that's week 1 and then it increments from there.  I just finished the 2nd time I did the 4 walk 1 run and it's still very challenging for me but I can do it and then still walk for however long after so I'm feeling good about this approach at least for now.  Keep us posted on your steps - here on Penguins Rule - we are all about forward motion - walk, waddle, run, crawl we are all ahead of the couch!

Ps., you don't really want to start a new post because then we wouldn't see it here on this ongoing thread.  So just reply to the person you want to reply to or if you are adding your own post either reply to the last person in the thread or you can use the "reply to original post" link at the bottom of the page - either works and puts your post in the same place at the end of the ongoing thread.

I jogged a full mile today with out stopping. I have never done that not even in high school when we had to do that stupid mile test I always had to walk  but NOT today I jogged the whole darn thing. At penguin pace of course I didnt even lose pace when my one smart *** dog was walking while I thought I was cruising, the other good dog at least pretended we were going fast and jogged with me. LOL talk about pride hurter when one of your dogs is walking while you think you are kicking it, but dont care I ran 1 MILE weeee!!  Hurt now? Yes but I did it!~!!

Welcome Harmonie! Way to go Conster and Kodie! So happy to see everyone moving it  -- Penguin style.

I went to the Wednesday night session of the running group I joined (Marathoners in Training). Unlike the Saturday session when there were three or four hundred people, last night there were only about 75 to 100 and it appears they were all the faster runners. Even the folks out for the "casual run" left me far behind by the first 1/4 mile. Felt a little sad, but I just kept going. I thought of all you penguins here on-line and realized I wasn't alone at all. You were all out there with me in spirit. I think from now on I'll stay home on Wednesdays and do my runs in my neighborhood with the dog. He never leaves me in the dust!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

    Hello, fellow Penguins!

I love the idea for this thread!  I am relatively new to Active, but have been a Penguin for a while.  I read John' (Bingham) book Marathoning for Mortals last year.  It is so filled with information and very motivating!  I recommend it to anyone who is working toward any sort of endurance run.  I ameven  running my first marathon in October!! It is on my "Booties List" (like a bucket list, but things I want to do before having kids).  When I signed up, I signed up for the slowest finishing pace they had.  This Penguin is officially a "Last Chance Pace Runner"!!  My only goals are to not fall down and to not get picked up by the slow bus!  Maybe I'll be "waddlin'" with some of you!!  Good luck with your goals!  You guys are great!  I'm so glad that I'm not the only one at the back of the pack!!

Way to go, Kodie!  You are beating back the couch!  I've been there, and now feel pretty comfortable with the 5K distance.  Thinking of signing up for a 10K, just to keep the challange going.Let's keep moving, penguins!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Harmonie - You can still use the C25K concept - just adapt it to meet your needs.  Start jogging 30 or even 20 secs at a time, walk as long as you need, then repeat.  Just gradually increase your times as your calves and quads get used to the new demands upon them.  If you are out of breath quickly, slow down to a real snails pace.  Sooner or later you will be able to do 60 secs straight, and you can try to start C25K.  Keep modifying it or repeating weeks as needed.  However, I think after 3-4 weeks, you will find that your body will be willing to accept more demands that you place on it, and you will gradually be able to plod/jog thru for longer and longer times.

The first 5K I did in Aug 2009 took me so long, that I got lost when I missed a turn (because everyone else was long gone). I finished 15 mins after the last other runner (62:42) and they had already reset the timer for the 1 mile race (I used my stopwatch time).  I still got 2nd in my age group! HA HA!

Yep, when you are in smaller races and you are a slow runner, things tend to get lonely real quick & you can become the last runner within 1-2 blocks.  So I would just run my run.  Even now, when I run longer races (10K or HM) I can still finish in the last 5% of runners, because slower runners usually don't attempt longer distances.

But hey - I'm out there & doing it the best that I can. (& Yes I swim a mile slowly too).

    Kodie - congratulations!  You rock!

I remember those stupid mile tests in high school and I don't think I ever managed to run the whole time, either.  I hated those days!

My dog walks when I run, but now I can outlast him so I win in the end, ha!

I recently started running too( March'11) started out very slow..15mm...I am now down to approx 11:30mm...I am truly loving running...I never ran until this year...I am 43 yrs old.  I bought the Nike+ Sensor and started using their training program...I am doing a 10K in August.  Their program is a 12 week program...so far so good...I a up to 5 miles with a pace on average of 11:30mm...Check out Nikeplus.com...you can follow the program without using the sensor..
