Need... water...

I'm relatively new to running, and the problem I'm having is a desperate and brain-foggying thing called thirst on my long runs! Does anyone have any recommendations for water belts? What works and what doesn't?
The woods are lovely dark and deep, but I have promises to keep; and miles to go before I sleep, and miles to go before I sleep.

Hi there! I was trying to solve the same problem some time ago. I'd been running with this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Rucanor-Fist-Runners-Bottle-Transparent/dp/B001UABXZU but then I found out that for 20 km runs it's not enough anymore. So did some research and ended up with this:

really happy with it!

Not faster, but farther. Not catch up, but hunt down.
I use this but it also comes in a 4 bottle belt model

I am a really new runner and I have the same problem. I am really thristy during a normal day, but when I run I get dry! Since it's winter I've been on a treadmill and I down a liter of water during a 3 mile run. I just today signed up to do my first 1/2 and that's the thing I'm most worried about, my thirst!
Is it realistic to run a half in one of these belts? Doesn't it make you feel weighted down, or rub the wrong way?
If you run a race you shouldn't be worried about this, there're refreshments every 5 km/3 mi (water, sports drinks). But for a training run of the length of a HM you'll have to figure out what's best for you. kI'll soon end up with a hydration backpack because I'm planning to do much longer runs. The belts are good but you should make sure the waistbelt has a stretchy part of some kind which ensures that is stays in place. (ie. the Inov8 doesn't have it, the Raidlight does)

I chew gum and it helps me with having a dry mouth. I can only chew certain ones though.
For long runs over 13 miles I run with a hydration pack. I don't really like to carry the extra weight though.
If you can plan your route around places to hydrate that can work too. I usually plan a route that has a bathroom on it as well.
I try to drink a lot of water before I run the next day and I also chew gum the day of my runs. ![]()
I try to make sure I am well hydrated before a longer run. And I am also a gum chewer, it really helps with dry mouth.

So if I may, which is the better choice, the littel bottles on your hips or the water pack on your back?
: ) thnaks
I run with a NATHAN belt on my long runs, which has 3 bottles... I position it with 2 'reserve' bottles in back and one up front for handy access that are easy to switch while running. if you get the correctly sized belt, the snugness and elastic keeps it in place well while also not feeling restrictive. I chew gum to help too.
as for a belt vs back pack, I'd say it's personal preference. I run in Florida and it is hot enough without something on my back, let alone the added funky tan marks depending on what time I get out there!
You have a choice- you can throw in the towel, or use it to wipe the sweat off your face

I much prefer the camel on my back. I tried a few waist belts but they give me rush if I tie them in the waist. If I tie them on the hips they keep jumping and as the bottles get empty it keeps coming up. I've heard guys usually don't have this problem because their hips are different, more square. I have the Salomon S-Lab Advanced Skin and it really fits like a second skin.

I'm glad to hear several people suggest chewing gum to help with the dry mouth. I rarely feel like I need more water, but my mouth will get so dry when I'm running that it drives me crazy. I've thought about carrying a squirt water bottle with me just to be able to squirt a little bit in my mouth whenever it gets dry, but chewing gum would be much easier so I'm definitely going to have to give that a try!

Erin...definitley stay hydrated all the time but for your runs...either get a fuel belt, run with a regular water bottle (like a nestle, poland springs) or plan out your routes in parks and areas where there are already water stops (or just hide your drinks on your course somewhere). Many people I know just run with a water bottle- it may take getting used to but it works for some! Good luck finding what works for you!

"What will you WEAR on your next RACE DAY???"
I just got an Amphipod hydration belt with 4 - 8 oz. bottles and a pouch for cell phone or other incidentals. Did my first run with it today and like it. Didn't really notice the extra weight (only 3 - 4 lbs) and it didn't feel bouncy or cumbersome.
