A 10k is 6.2 miles. At a minimum you would want to be able to run 5-6 miles to even try it to run all the way through. If you are planning to walk or walk/run you could pobably do it, but it will probably be a struggle. It depends on what you are doing now in your training runs.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Have been dealing with some inner calf pain on my right leg for about a month and now a little on my left.   I always stretch and ice after my runs.  I have good shoes and the proper ones for my running style and foot shape, and orthotics.  I run 3 times a week on a treadmill.  I have been doing the whole R.I.C.E thing this week and have done no running or biking.  Only swim training this week.  Beginning to wonder if I have muscle separtation or stress fractures.  I have a triathlon in 3 weeks and really can't afford to rest too much.  Does anyone have any experience with this?  Thanks for your help.

I get aches pains and pulls every run. You know your body better than anyone- if it's different than what you normally deal with it may be time to see the doc. Better to know for sure and risk major injury. Beside, he may just say it's nothing serious and youll be good to go.

Susan I'm so sorry to hear you are having pains.  I don't have any good (or any) advice but will be thinking about you and sending good recovery vibes your way.  I would offer that while you have your heart set on a race you can't afford to rest for, that you are better off walking it than pushing your self past some limit, so rest up and that might get you more ready in the end.  Keep us posted.

Ok Tex-  I will be running a routine run of 5k or more this weekend - so I will join the virtual run and donate to the Mercer County Shelter.  It is on Facebook.  Will try to link it to the Penguins site.  Great Idea - I may just take the loveable labbie for a 5k walk...?  either way I will send my virtual signup for the 5k in real time green useable cash to the Shelter.

Ploddled along tonight - not pretty and was not able to do more than 37 minutes of actually plodding.  Walked the rest of my route 45 minutes and going to be content that I moved.  It was an off night.  It happens.     I tried a new salad at lunch Cherry/Pecan salad - lettuce with cherries & pecans with a raspberry vineagerette - think it is a healthy choice and a step of change for me.  http://crackedpepperpeoria.com/    This was the resteraunt - just an fun little site you might like to look at - food was great.   There is a bakery there that was lovely, but I did not 'put that crap in my mouth'.   I wanted to though.       Waddling on to Thursday

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Newbie Here     56 year old male     Started brisk walking July 2009. I have a 5K route all mapped out that I enjoy. I was going at about 41 minutes 5X per week.  7 Weeks ago I decided to start adding jogging into the routine. Wow, was this a change. My thighs would burn after about 1/2 mile, so i'd just walk for a while and resume the jog when I felt up to it. First week I was going at about 38 -39 minutes. Now I do a lot more of it jogging and I time at about 32 minutes now.     My main barrier is not a cardio weakness as much as my lower thigh above the knee gets *heavy* and for a few weeks the knee pain was pretty bad. I eased off from 6X per week to between 4-5 workouts a week and the knee pain is much more manageable.     Can anyone share experiences about beginners heavy thighs and knee pain (around the patella, not deep inside)?  Also what expectations should I have for inproved times over the next year?     Thanks  Scarlet Fire

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

    Welcome Scarlet Fire,

Yes, I have been where you are!  I attempted running a number of times and quit because I thought that the knee pain meant that I just couldn't run.  I read a great book called "The Non-Runners Marathon Trainer" and it explained that the pain is due to a lack of muscle support.  As you continue, you will build the muscles around your knee, as well as in your upper and lower legs and your knees will no longer hurt.  I haven't had any knee pain at all in the last 8 weeks and I only began running 3 months ago.  The best thing to do is take it slow.  Don't increase your time or mileage too fast and keep an easy pace.  After each run make sure to due an ice massage.  It's much better than leaving an ice pack directly on your knee.  Sometimes you can damage the tissue from too much cold.  To due an ice massage, fill small dixi cups with water and freeze.  Peel the bottom of the cup off and rub the muscles that are sore.  Use a fair amount of pressure and just peel the paper as the ice melts.

    Good luck to you!

    Susan

What's the virtual run? I scanned the FB page, but only see one post about someone doing it. I'll be running 4 miles on Saturday and am willing to donate to a local no-kill shelter for that. Does that count?

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Your stories are all so inspiring!  I would love to run my town's annual 5k on Independence Day. It starts on the outskirts of town and eventually leads you along the parade route, through a cheering crowd! I watched it growing up and always thought it would be cool to run it. I looked up the finish times from last year's race and the year before and now I'm feeling unsure.  The finish times are all faster than my personal best- 34:23. I would love to do this run but I'm so worried about coming in last in front of so many people (including my parents!!).  I've upped my runs to 4 miles instead of just 3. Even so, I don't know if that will help. So I haven't decided what to do yet.

I really admire those of you who put your pride aside and run the race for the sake of finishing and doing your best, even when you come in last. I wish I had your courage!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Hey 350, good job looking for a race to take on.  That one sounds so very cool.  I for one can promise you that there is soooooo much fun being last at one of these community races.  Everyone cheers for you.  Everyone is proud of you.  Everyone celebrates that you started and that you finished.  No one gives a penguin's=a$$ what your time is (except you will look of course).  I am really really slow - like 48 min on a flat course slow.  And I've gotten nothing but positive encouragement from every race I've signed up for.  Give it a try you will find it is just fine!  The only thing I do is carefully read the info about the race - occasionally they will post a maximum time limit because of road closures so I avoid those but otherwise they've been great.  And as slow as I am (way slower than you) I was only ever the very very last once.  Usually I'm in the back three though :-).  Give it a try and we will all be cheering you on from here!  As we like to say "Penguin Up!".
