Hey Kim, Congrats on your first race!!! Try to run your pace and dont let the excitement overwhelm you. I always know someone is going to be faster than me BUT I might be faster than someone else too. Just think, you get to set your first PR on Monday. Enjoy the short time it will take (it goes by quick) and use this as the road to many more. Have fun, smile when you cross that finish line, and dont forget to grab that medal that you earned. You'll remember that one always!!!

Congratulations and good luck tomorrow! I had the same goal when I did my first race - just finish the darn thing, and preferrably not be the last person to cross the finish line =). But even if I had been, that was okay, too!

Well, I had fun.....I only could run 2.5 miles then I had to walk the rest - I finished it 49 .42 mins. There were a few hills to run and I'm not used to hills.
so I guess I'll have to find some hills to run
thanks
Kim
Congratulations on finishing the race!!! I'll bet there were some who didn't finish and you beat them. Now you have a PR and a new goal to work towards. You'll be running the entire 3 miles in no time I'm sure. Keep up the good work, keep having fun, and enter another 5k in the not to distant future. Once again congrats on your achieved goal, to finish. It keeps getting better :-).

Congratulations Kim! The fact that you ran 2.5 miles is fantastic! I am entering my first race on August 13. It's a two mile race, and I am currently on the third session of week 6 of the C25K program.
I need some advice (please). I am 54, tall and thin. I have never been much of a runner, even back on the track team in high school (I was a high jumper). Anyway, I've worked up to where I can run 20 minutes on the treadmill set at 4.6. I'm focusing on just being able to run - not trying to break any speed records. I've made a lot of progress to be able to run 20 minutes, BUT, when I try to run outside (at a nice easy pace), I can only run about 1 and 1/2 times around the school track which comes out to about 10 minutes. I've run on streets and haven't been able to run for very long either. I am in Austin, TX and it's been around 100 degrees every day. I don't want to get up at 6am, or run late at night, to beat the heat. I have read where you can make the treadmill run more like running outside by setting the treadmill up a notch on the incline. My question is: If I finish the C25K program, mostly on the treadmill, do I have a prayer of finishing this 2 mile race? My goal is exactly the same as yours was - to finish and not come in dead last. I also do not want to collapse and make a scene! Can you give me some words of wisdom? I was going to post to the over 50 link, but thought I'd touch base with you first. Thanks for any help you can give me. Sue
Sue;
I don't believe that using a treadmill is the same as running on the road or track. Also, please note that I, myself have not been running all that long, so instead of giving you professional running advice, I will just give you my own observations.
Your Stats - Tall and Thin makes you sound like a runner. Your age is not a factor, unless you have some health conditions that you have not shared.
* On my first run I decided to only run 1 mile... I made it .23 miles before I had to stop running. I walked the last .77 miles.
* Day 2 I ran a little slower and I made it .55 miles and then I walked for .45 Miles
* 3rd day I ran I made it 1.00 miles and I walked another .25 miles.
Each day builds upon the other. Every day after that gets a bit easier. If I can do it, then you can too.
Also, I would not worry about how fast you run.
My question is, why can you only run 1.5 times around the track? I'll assume the track is .25 miles long. I might also ask you if you are trying to run to fast, which is the reason why you wipe yourself out so fast. It simply sounds like you have not built up your endurance yet. So try a slower pace.
So, I would just take it slow, one day at a time. Pick a distance goal. Then run till you reach that goal. If you don't make it the whole way, walk the rest. Before you know it, you will reach your goal and you can set another one for yourself. You know you can do it:) Good Luck!
and KIM... Way to go! Congrats on yur first race:)

Thanks Guy. I really appreciate your help. I have no underlying medical issues. It's super hot outside down here in TX and I get out of breath quickly. But when you said you run a certain distance at a time, it made me realize something. When I first started the running program, I was only able to run a short length of time - not even a third around the track. But the other day I went out and ran more than one lap without stopping. I was happy about that, so I will do as you say and walk when I can't run anymore. Question: Should I finish the C25K program and then start running more frequently than 3 times a week? Thanks so much for your support.
Nan;
I think C25K is a very good way to give your body the mental and physical exercise that it needs. I would certainly continue to do C25K if it is working for you. You can always add more to the C25K program if you wish. Just be sure not to overtrain to much, else you will risk injury. IMO: I would C25K and add an extra run in on any day that you wish. I run either 4 or 5 days per week, depending upon schedule, so you can certainly do the same. Take care.
