Hi all, I'm juuuust starting- W1D2 tomorrow. I'm 27, 5'4", and about 50-60 pounds above where I'd like to be, and heading out for the first time the other day I was surprised at what I could do! I ended up stopping one 60-second round short, not because I was exhausted, but because I was overheated (doing this in Texas in July, where even at the crack of dawn we're in the 80s- tomorrow I'm going to try to go a little earlier still, and drink more water before and during).
My question is this: The first few 60 seconds of jogging, I just listened to my body and went at the pace that felt right- afterwards I was breathing heavily, but not out of breath, if you know what I mean (it didn't occur to me to try talking; will do this next time). My husband, who is an 'actual' runner, is helping me out with moral support and the stopwatch, and he mentioned to me that he thought we might be going too fast- this was based just purely on the numbers, which I think was something like a 10 or 11-minute mile pace. Now, at the end of the session I couldn't help but go more slowly, but when I intentionally slowed the pace early on in response to my husband's comment, I found that it was uncomfortable! For some reason I 'felt' it more, especially in the knees. Interestingly, I remember that when hubby enrolled in a running class after going it on his own for a while, he had a similar experience- he told me he'd 'found his pace', and that going at this slightly faster clip eliminated knee discomfort for him (and this is a tall, thin, fit guy).
Anybody experience anything similar or know why this might be? I know I'm going to have to find a way to go more slowly as the time/distance increases or I'll wear myself out, but this was just too weird.
Short, fast strides were most comfortable for me at paces slower than 10 min/mile. With long, slow strides I felt that I was landing too hard on my heels and my lower body was taking a pounding as a result.

Definitely listen to your body. My legs want to do a faster pace, which was great a shorter distances. Once I started running more than 2 miles my lungs wanted me to slow down. Don't be afraid to let your pace fluctuate based on your distance, fatigue level, heat/humidity, etc. Of course, I've only been running since Memorial Day. Good luck!
It is generally harder to hold good form at slower paces. You just need to be aware of your body and try to adjust for the best feel.
