how have u tested your true potential?

this morning i ran 6.06km in 33minutes

not record breaking by any means, but the second fastest time i have run this course

sometimes,i think that the pace u set yourself is not only based on your training and ability-but also your confidence

iam not the most confident runner-even tho i day dream about running in an olympic marathon....

.....me and haile...crossing the line together.... (if u are going to day dream make it a good one i say)

have u discovered your potential? and do u keep testing yourself?

Discovered my potential? Dunno. But I can tell you that I test the boundaries every now and then. And not just in running, either. I've pushed myself in every sport I've ever tried, which is quite a few. What's the point of doing all this if you never find out how much progress you've made or what you're capable of?

I enjoy testing my running boundaries. I usually surprise myself.... I run a lot of local races and always try to do better. I try to leave everything on the race course. In other words, I make sure I am spent by the time I cross the finish line.

Re: how have u tested your true potential?
I'm sure that there are things in my training, diet etc. that I could always improve upon.

But like mr. bill, when I run a race, I always try to run to the best of my ability, whatever that happens to be on race day.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that I run as hard as I can.

I just don't always get there as fast as I'd like to.

Re: how have u tested your true potential?
Deflection test.... developed by a cyclist but applicable to runners. It can be done on track or treadmill. It involves a good 15-20 min warm up.

Run a quarter mile at a particular pace and measure your heart rate for the final few yards. Do the next quarter at a faster pace, measure HR, and continue to collect data points of pace and HR.

You run to exhaustion then plot Pace vs HR and if done properly, you will see a straight line through your aerobic zone then a deflection in the graph at the point you reach lactic threshold.

I'm still setting PRs so I think I'm still pushing the limits of my abilities. I plan to keep trying.

Re: how have u tested your true potential?
Each race and workout is a test of my potential, but very few races are a real test of the absolute fastest I can go. Some test my ability to use specific racing strategies, others for team tactics. Somtimes workouts are mental tests that are used to boost confidence. Time trials serve a similar purpose.

Through high school I was just trying to be "good" as I was one of the slower guys on the team. My first two years in college, I have realized were spent trying to live up to my dad's running career. Turns out that I had far surpassed what he ever did, but didn't know that. Last XC season I lived from race to race, trying to stay on the traveling team, and salvage the season after a summer stress fracture. I ran at conference, but missed the team to regionals. I still believe I would have been in our top five had I run at regionals. After the season I took a sub-max vO2max treadmill test that pointed to a pretty high vO2max. Since then I have decided that I want to surpass the ability that my vO2max predicts for me. I am well on my way, and I am probably in the best shape of my life, but I know there is a lot farther that I can go.

Re: how have u tested your true potential?
In the past year I have hiked farther and faster while carrying more that I ever have before. My favorite climbing route doesn't leave me exhausted after one time up it. In fact, I did it twice in a row this summer and was still ready for more when I packed it in at the end of the day. Have I tested my limits? I don't think so. But I sure have expanded them.

Re: how have u tested your true potential?
I am always testing my potential. I'm 45 and have been running for 10 years, but I still think I have some PRs left in me. I'm going to train smarter this year, making the most of my miles, and hopefully have my best year so far.
