Man, I'd be thrilled to do a 5K in 30 minutes! Heck, 36 would rock, too.

You know, I thought I looked good when I ran. That was until I got some pictures that Marathonfoto had taken at the 8K I did in April. OMG, I looked like I was being mauled by a bear!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

This morning I rolled out of bed at 4;00 a.m. for my LSD for the week. I did 12 miles - a new personal distance record! I'm well on schedule to do my 1st of two marathons to beat cancer in October. Still, there is a long way to go. Next week I'm going to try a Dean Karnazes (famous ultra runner) runaround. I head out to Sanborondon for a 5k next Sunday morning which I'll use as a test of my fitness. Then I'll run home, stopping along the way as the mood strikes me to get a coffee or a snack or take pictures. It's a way to get the mileage and time on the feet in in a low-key sort of way. I'm aiming for a total of 15-16 miles next week, combining the 5k and the runaround together.

    Prayers for my survival, please!

Way to go Richard! 5 miles is the most I've done, but I'm going to have to kick it up to add in more miles if I want to make it through the 10K in October.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Kristy re. "..right now it's so hot and humid that I'm running on the indoor track at  the gym and it feels like being a rat in a maze.  I'm ready for a little  cooler weather!"

I can relate to that! I am so tired of high humidity and high 90's to 100 degree temps.  I find that I am half dead after about 20 minutes or so regardless of pace. It makes it impossible for me to run any distance at all. That's the bad news. The good news is that I started pushing the pace a little and got in a 2 mile run in less than 18 minutes.  Not only that but I am now training at a pace that is under 9:30 per. To me that's good!

When I do run on a dreadmill It's a bit quicker. I use a natural running styyle and running quickly on the dreadmill is significantly easier than on the road. That's because the natural style implements a lean that puts you more on your toes as you lean forward to gain the horixzontal vector that moves you forward. There is no need to run forward across the floor of the gym ( the dreadmill is fixed wrt the earth's gravity) as the belt just moves under you and you are in essence just hopping as it moves.  But I am just too bored running indoors to do much distance.  I end up going to the weight machines.

I expect I can start to increase my longer runs once the weather cools down. I have to run at about 7:00 in the morning if I want to go 3 miles of more.  I end up losing over 5 # of sweat and I only weigh a little over 160 now.  From what I read, it is not healthy to lose near 3% of your normal weight during a run. I have lost so much weight this year, that I just replaced my whole wardrobe but my shoes and coats.

Bring on that good old 85 degree weather so I can start to feel human again!

    Good running all!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Richard- Congrats on your 12 mile run.  I was actually supposed to do 12 mi this week, but my current location prevents it.  I've been at a Fitness Spa all week, in the rolling hills of Tennessee.  I need flatter roads to do that distance, or at least less humid conditions.  Its been lows in the mid-70's and very humid, so running in these hills in the AM leaves me drenched.  I did a slow jog of 8 miles Weds, and an 8 mile hilly walk today.

This try to jump start weight loss seems to have worked. Total run or walk distance the last 7 days is 28.5 miles, bike 73 miles, swim 5 miles, plus 11 hrs aerobics or strength training.  Result: lost 7 lbs, 2% body fat. I will have to see how this impacts my training in the next few weeks, if I can maintain the wt and continue at least 90 mins of workouts daily.

    Scruffy, that's an awsome analysis!

I never ran on a treadmill but when I run (outside) and I look down at my feet, I get the impression of a treadmill, probably because I "hop"more up and down instead of running forward. But I am enjoying my treadmill-style on the road. :-)

    Hi penguins!

I hope you all have /had a nice sunday! Yesterday my brother in law ran with my and today he told me that his calves are sore! He used muscles he doesn't use when running fast (which is what he usually does).

Hehe, I was delighted to hear that a penguin can challenge runner who is in shape.

Paularun, i also would be thrilled with a 30 minute 5K. I am just now trying to do different training on different days.  After C25K, i thought that i should do three miles every time i decided to jog.  I am now trying to do more intervals and woking on different things on different days.  I am a creature of habbit and i like to always do things in overdrive.  I really love reading this thread everyone is so nice and give such great advice.  I look forward to checking it every day.  Like i said before i don't always post but i do read it regularly.

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

I'm finally getting back into the routine of running after having taken a couple of months off this spring.  It feels so good to be back running.  I did 8 miles on Friday and although they were very slow (13:30 mm), they felt great.  The final two miles seemed easier than the first 6.  I am always amazed by how much I hate the first 5 miles of any run.  I'm so glad I kept going and discovered that I prefer the long runs.

I think today I am going to do sprints.  I need to get my speed back to where it was (which was about 11:30 mm for the long runs) and I think sprints one day a week should help.  I'm currently reading "Run Less Run Faster" for ideas.

I finished my first tri yesterday. In true penguin fashion (add ther walrus in for the swimming). My time was 2:00:23.7. 500 yard swim (15:13.4)  Bike 13.2 miles (56:09.8) and 5K run (45:00 - YUK!) It was fun, transitions were a challenge, none of my times were what they would be individually. And, I was not last. I was 117 overall (men and women) out of 212. I am sore this morning, but I feel good. It was fun. Hope everyone had a great weekend.

Awesome job, ,textsurfmonkey, on your triathlon!   Congratulations!!  I so want to get up enough nerve to tackle that but, of course, first I'd have to tackling swimming and bicycling on something other than a stationary bike.    I think it is in my future, though..  Gotta find a used bike.  ANyway, congratulations!!!

I managed a brisk 7.5 miles at 14:37 pace.  Not fast but slow and steady or brisk walk.  It was 84 degrees and 89% humidity so going any faster jacked up my heart rate and caused profuse sweating that won't evaporate.   So, I kept it at a brisk walk.  STill, faster than the couch, right??!!

Hope everyone is having a great weekened of exercise!

Never heard the term "dreadmill!"  I laughed right outloud!!!. I've run on one a couple times in the past couple weeks secondary to jungle-like humidity/rain/thunderstorms. I count forwards, backwards, other peoples' reps in the gym, besides listening to my ipod; anything to keep me going.  thanks for making me smile and congrats on the weight loss!!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

congrats to everyone on your increased mileage and weight loss! Also, thanks for the pointers on the heat running!

We'll just keep right on goin right! I have been shortening my long distance running lately to focus more on speed and weight loss. The constant running at the same pace just hasn't been doing it for me lately. I've been getting bored. So, what I've done is shortened my runs to a 3 mile max and throughout the run I have been sprinting intervals and adding some grapevines, strength training, burpees, etc. Just entertaining myself basically, and my upper body has been so sore too! I think I might go ahead and go for a long run today just to make sure I am maintaing my stamina, but the break has definitely helped.

I did my first hike yesterday. I was so scared. I mean, I'm in texas so there weren't very many hilly inclines, but I took the short distance because I couldn't do it by myself. I just kept thinking what if a venomous snake bites me, and no one is there to help me? or alligators, or a really angry bumblebee, you know nature haha. But i think I've talked my husband into coming, I mean, yea the woods is scary, but im not going to lie, it was interesting. Next time I'll bring a weapon.

Keep it up everyone, I'm getting closer to my 20lb mark, so I might post up a progress pic soon!
