Re: Do you avoid mentioning your mileage?
working at a YMCA with a lot of older exercising adults keeps things in perspective for me, I think ... I see people in there 60's and 70's doing an hour of steady aerobics and following it up with strength training ... that's a couple hours of steady exercise for somebody nearly twice my age ... running 2-3 hours at a time isn't that big a thing, really ...

Re: Do you avoid mentioning your mileage?
Last April 05,I delivered my baby girl. My problem was that I weight 260 pounds. I had made up my mind before that I will run the Alaska MArathon in June 06. Well, 2 weeks after I had my baby, I started running on my treadmill. I could barely make 10 minutes at a speed of 5.0. It was hard but I kept doing it. After 6 weeks, I was back at work so I was able to run outside. Oh my gosh! I could only run 1 mile and it was very slowly. Well I kept on running. Soon after, I was able to run 2 miles. Soon after that, 3 miles. Well people at work kept asking me how much I ran cause they would see me out there. I would tell them 3 miles. Everybody was wow!!!!

Well now that we are March 06, I count my mileage per week. (Cause I am now a runner :-) When people ask me now how far I run, I tell them about 20 miles a week. I get this weird look like why am I telling them per week and not what I run everytime. I guess it's a runner thing.

I always envied people that could just run forever. It took me a while to get there and now I'm enjoying it so much, I can't stop. Can't wait for June.

I get what your saying. I played highschool and college golf, and was a golf pro for 10 yrs. People, just being freindly, would ask me what I shoot. As if I shoot the same score every round. I am always like, well it depends. Then I would hit on their wife.

Re: Do you avoid mentioning your mileage?
Everyone who knows me at all knows I'm a runner. If the topic comes up I'll tell them how much I run or how much I'm going to run (I've got a 10-miler coming up this weekend etc.) I do sometimes get strange looks or comments which I give right back to whoever is giving them to me as if to say "You don't understand why I run so much and I don't understand why you don't". To be honest I revel in the 'wierdness' of being a long distance runner.

Re: Do you avoid mentioning your mileage?
Awesome job GiseleB!

Here is a funny story I don't tell much. When I was training for my first marathon I had to skip one of my sons soccer games for a 20 mile run. My husband mentioned to one of the parents why I wasn't there.( I only missed that one game his whole season) Anyway the next week his game was about an hour away from where we lived. It started at 10am. I didn't want to miss again but I had to get in 15 miles and the only time I had was early that morning. So I got up and out by 5:30ish and ran in the pouring rain, came home showered and off to soccer. Well I am standing there with all the parents under our umbrellas and one of the mom says "oh you aren't running 20 miles today?" I just kind of looked at her for a minute debating on if I should just lie or tell the truth so I go for the truth and say "no I only had to run 15 today and I did that before I came here." I think everyone in ear shot just turned and looked at me like I was some kind of a freak! I was like yeah I know I am crazy.

Re: Do you avoid mentioning your mileage?
I think people look at us weird at first, and then jealousy follows.

This quote explains it all. I saw it yesterday. I absolutly love it.

"I do today what you won't, so I can do tomorrow what you can't"

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Re: Do you avoid mentioning your mileage?
I'm very honest and don't lie. I tell them. I love the weird looks. I know it's envy. I look good and they don't. I'm incredibly fit and they're not. You all should think that too. AND yes, if you run 1 mile a day or 1 mile a week, you're a runner and be proud of it! I run 60 miles a week and a long run on Sundays. I run sub 7 pace for the long runs and I always get the "Are you crazy?" look from that. I ask them, what have you done for yourself today. I think America has gone to the crapper about being fit. Be proud that you're doing something for yourself. It's like that show, The Biggest Loser; I find it so inspirational. Those people are making a difference in their lives forever AND they're inspiring other people too. More than they'll ever know. Don't lie, you should have to.

Re: Do you avoid mentioning your mileage?
Mom4- i had a similar experience at a baby shower. I ran a 22 mile run on a ridiculously hot and humid day this summer before my friends shower. I casually said something to her about how it went well until about mile 18 when i ran out of gatorade, i started to get a little tired. She relayed this to everyone there and it was the running joke of the day! "She got a little tired at mile 18...." lol. It was funny.

Re: Do you avoid mentioning your mileage?
I agree with whomever said that a non-runner has no capacity to understand mileage anyway. If I run 20 mpw or 50 mpw, its all the same to them. Typically, I don't talk about running except to three people: boyfriend, best girlfriend, and mom. Those three people are truly proud of me and know that I'm not just bragging.

Funny, relevant story below:
Recently we were at an engagement dinner party with close friends. Someone miscalculated their stomach capacity and could not finish their cake. He began offering it around the table, and I quickly snatched it up despite the fact that I had already eaten two pieces. (i like cake, okay?) My boyfriend stood up for me saying, "its okay, you ran like 20 miles today" (an exaggeration). This was followed by my best girlfriend saying "yeah, she's always either running or eating" (not an exaggeration). Then my friend jane doe who is about 50 lbs overweight and steadily growing said "I can only manage the eating part".

Point of this story? not really sure...
I guess it was nice to be recognized for my long run that day. It was also good to point out that I do exercise a lot to be able to eat cake. I hate it when people say things like, "I'm getting so fat" but then, they do nothing about it. I'm at an age where a lot of my friends are really starting to pack on the pounds (late 20's), but aren't willing to run with me (i've tried).

So, no. I don't tell my mileage, it only makes people feel bad about themselves.

Re: Do you avoid mentioning your mileage?
I love to tell people about my long runs and that I put in 60+ miles a week. I like to watch the gears turn as they start to comprehend that. Then I like to hit them with 3 years ago I couldn't run down the block. I am trying to turn as many people into runners as I can, one person at a time.
