Wideguy, thought you'd like to see what my husband and I both got last night:

    IMG_20110802_195043.jpg

We took them out for a short spin last night (about a mile walk with a few sprints 'cuz it felt so good). I can't quite bring myself to go totally barefoot because the areas where we run have a fair amount of trash and poo that would not be pleasant to clean off afterward (ewwww!), but I love the feel of running/walking in these. While I could feel the workout my calves were getting, it wasn't bad--I'm not planning on wearing them for long runs, however, at least not until I've used them for awhile.

For these types of runs I start my watch as I cross the start line and stop it when I make it to the finish.  the official time will be what it is.

My PR for a 5K resulted in non-chip race that somehow screwed up the order.  I picked up around 5 free min..they said I was 30 min while my watch said 35....

    Re: 200+ Pound Club!

Looking for anyone who has experienced foot/ankle pain that is on top of my foot  --  experienced it first while on drive from Virginia to Chicago.  bad enough  to keep me awake.  I cannot tie it to running, biking or karate.  its  my non-driving foot  (left).  I had planned to get some road work in  this week while on vacation but have decided to take it easy.  Most  times I can trace foot pain to turning ankle over or stepping in hole  etc. I have full range of motion and no loss of strength.  I have HM in one month so hoping this doesn't last more than week or so.

it is annoying enough and painful enough that it makes walking noticeable.  Stairs etc likewise.  it started 3-4 hours into drive.  My ankle does feel slightly tighter than normal but I or my wife can detect no swelling.

anyone who has experienced something like this - I would welcome any advice etc.

    Re: 200+ Pound Club!

I don't know if this can help--

I have had the same pain lately--across the front of the ankle joint and top of the instep.

I have been stretching this area by manually bending my foot downward (leaving the foot and ankle and calf muscles limp, and bend with my hands.)

I've also carefully placed the top of my foot on a step and then stepped down a few steps with the other foot, then gently do a "lunge" so that the foot to the rear is getting stretched while my leg muscles are soft.  It seems to help.

I've noticed this pain after doing consistent forefoot strike on a treadmill with 2% incline.

    good luck!

EM, I can definiely understand the mental,  I'm hoping that at some point I zone out and just run. Haha. I tried to go out last night and run for 8 min without stopping,  but I couldn't do it. I will by next week.  Enjoyed reading article. s by Jeff Galloway, have a lot more reading to do. Thank you for pointing me in that direction. Looking forward to tomorrow morning run. W4D2 here I come. :-)

    Re: 200+ Pound Club!

@ Charles--I hear you about wanting to zone out and run--maybe someday.....

I am embracing the run/walk Galloway stuff, while still trying to increase my long runs.  My biggest fear right now is injury (since I am just coming back...)  I want to do a half marathon on October 18, and if I get injured again and have to sit out, there will be no way that I will be able to complete the race.  While I would love to be able to run the whole thing, I am perfectly fine with finishing it by running/walking.  I have a lot of miles to go between now and then, and it seems the best way to be able to do that injury free will be by combining walking/running.

Good luck on your run tomorrow!!  You CAN do it!!

st patrick's day 11.jpgMy Name is Bryan Smith.  I am almost 37 years old.  I would love to run again.  I would really love to lose 85 pounds.  This is my starting point.  I'm 272 pounds.  I've gained 5-6 pounds a year since I got out of the Marine Corps in 1998.  I saw this forum and I had to join.  Finally!  People who can relate with some of the obstacles I face.  Thank You

    Re: 200+ Pound Club!

@ Ogr44--Is your pain kind of a pinpoint pain, and does it hurt to firmly tap on it?  If so, you might have a stress fracture--which would mean 4-6 weeks off.  The problem with stress fractures is that if you keep running through the pain, they can worsen and, worst case scenario, become a full blown fracture.  I am hoping that is not what's going on....

    Re: 200+ Pound Club!

I am enjoying my training with the C25K intervals.  They definitely have me gaining ground on running that I never thought I would be able to do again.  We used to run in combat boots when I was in basic training and my arches fell. That was painful. But that was the last time until now that I have actually run more than 4 minutes steady. . I officiated basketball for several years, but that was years ago but that wasn't  constant steady running.  I purchased a HRM tonight. Hope it works well as its not a Super High Dollar one. Has a chest strap so I'm excited to use it tomorrow on my W4D2. We will see what it says compared to RunKeeper as far as calories burned goes.   WG, that's great about both boys wanting to run. My son and I are planning on competing in a Sprint Triathalon for newbies in Austin Texas next April. He's training to compete and i'm training to finish. LOL !!. I'll post tomorrows results in the  morning.
