Any Ideas?

I have a soldier who came to me a few months ago who has a problem running his PT test in the alloted amount of time, he has to run two miles in 17 mins flat. The last time i test him he ran a 1750-18 min but i need to get that minute of fhis back. Before he came to me (7-8 mos prior) he was running in the 14s and low 15s now it seems he cant beat this 17 to save his life. He isnt at all over weight he makes all the runs during PT in the morning but cant seem to pass his run on the APFT anyone have any suggestions on any kind of leg strengthing exercises that will help with running and maybe some techniques to use for breathing and going the distance, I have noticed breathing is a big problem for him too. Thanks for your help.

Re: Any Ideas?
Leg strength isn't the problem, it's his aerobic base. He needs to do more low-intensity, long-duration training. Light running, elliptical machine, biking, swimming, etc. If he keeps the intensity low enough that he can maintain the workout for 30-60 minutes, 3-4 times per week, he'll get the aerobic capacity back and will smoke the run test. But it will take a couple months at least.

Re: Any Ideas?
Everybody above is right, but one more thing:

For runs longer than a few minutes, your speed is proportional to your weight. Dropping 10% bodyweight will make you 10% faster at the same effort.

There are all sorts of exceptions to this, but in his case it's likely that none of them apply.
