AbebeBikila, a soldier in the imperial guard of Ethiopia's Haile Selassie, wasn'tjust the first African athlete to win a gold medal in Olympic competition. Hewon the marathon in the 1960 games while running barefoot, then defied odds towin again in Tokyo four years later. Between the two victories, however, henearly faced execution after being used as a pawn by leaders of an unsuccessfulcoup against Selassie. His life has all the makings of a compelling story—anddespite being billed as a biography, Rambali's account takes a highlynovelistic approach, imagining the inner thoughts of Bikila (1932–1973) andother figures in every scene. The technique is suspect, given the failure tocite documentation for such speculation when all the major players have beendead for decades. Furthermore, key historical details are inexplicablybypassed; when a German philanthropist donates hundreds of running shoes toEthiopia's athletic program, for example, the name of the shoe company is nevermentioned. Rambali also falls short as a dramatist, awkwardly juxtaposingBikila's career against the personal turmoil of his trainer, Onni Niskanen, andthe declining years of Selassie's reign.
Ajogging handbook. It renews Arthur Lydiard's philosophy of jogging, just as itwas 40 years ago. It is a guide to why you should jog, if you are not joggingalready; how you jog, or jog better if you jog already; and how it holds backthe degeneration that does not necessarily have to accompany the advancingyears. Lydiard argues that jogging will not stop you growing older but it willhelp you to grow older more gracefully and with less loss of both physical andmental mobility.
Youhave to be or have been a dedicated runner, or at least a serious athlete, toappreciate the motivation behind the things that Don Kardong undertakes in thisbook. It also helps to be or have been a triathlete and/or a multi-sport enthusiastsince Kardong frequently finds himself involved in competitions which requireskill in something other than running. Fortunately for everyone involved,Kardong has a great sense of humor and is truly in love with his sport. Bothdedication and humor are found in abundance here. I especially enjoyed thepiece about Steve Prefontaine and Kardong's attendance at a Triathlete workshopwhere he steadfastly refused to so much as look at the swimming pool.
