I am a 48 year old woman who doesn't currently participate in any exercise program. I am unable to walk for more than 10-15 minutes at a time. I have a DREAM.... to walk the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan on Labor Day 2013. I realize this is alot of work, alot of weight needs to come off, and a body transformation. I am wondering what sort of tips you might be able to offer me to get me headed in the right direction. Any encouragement would be welcome.
Thanks,

North of 350 here.
How long is the bridge?
I would suggest weight training. Perhaps do some 5Ks to build up your stamina (it's done wonders for me).

Thanks for the reply! The bridge is 5 miles long. My goal right now is to walk every other day and do some sort of stretching and lower back strengthing exercises on the opposite days. As I said in my original post I can only walk 10-15 minutes at a time. I feel like I have a long way to go.... but I'm just tryin' to keep the faith that I'll make it to the other side of this longterm goal. How is your stamina being "north of 350"? Have you always been active?
In a word,YES! You can do it. The only way you can't is if you don't try. Don't worry that it's 10-15 minutes now as that will get much better the more you do. Set small goals, make them and set harder goals. Keep a log so you can't cheat on yourself. Keep us informed how you are doing.
I know you can make it!
Steve
Start adding a couple of minutes --- just when you reach that 10 - 15 minutes timeframe and you think that you need to be done, pretend you hear my voice telling you to go on for 2 more minutes. You can do ANYTHING for two minutes! Add 2 minutes every week.... if you did that for a year you'd be up over 100 minutes, and I'll be that a 5 mile walk would be somewhere closer to 75 minutes... You can do it! Two more minutes! Two at a time.
Thanks Steve! I truly want to do this for myself. I'm only a few days in on the walking, but I believe if I can just look at it one step at a time, I will make it. I need to strenghten my back. Hopefully I'll find a good way to do that. For right now, I'm concentrating on stretching and walking. Thanks for the encouragement. I'll keep posting!

Thanks Cathy! Once I get past my first week... I WILL push myself those 2 extra minutes... and on and on. I like that idea. Seems very doable and that is a huge thing for me right now. I need to just break this down into "doable" segments. Thanks for the encouragement!

UPDATE!
Still hangin' in there. Have been walking most nights. Have pushed myself to go a little further. I think I might have to stay at this level for a week or so. It includes an incline. I'm currently still feeling challenged by it. I know not to get comfortable though. Just trying to keep the faith... no matter the circumstances!
Love this advice! It's so true...sometimes when we look at things it can seem impossible but I can do ANYTHING for 2 minutes! Thanks, and I hope you don't mind me borrowing this advice ![]()
Hang in there. It will be so worth it! I walked the bridge several years ago. I couldn't do it now because of the weight I've gained. I keep waiting for the motivation to hit me to do something about it. Life just seems to get in the way but I really hope that you make your goal. I'm rooting for you ![]()
Thanks JoZeeMom! I believe my biggest challenge is to keep my head on straight as I make my way thru this journey. Remembering that I CAN do it. Remembering to not let life get in my way... because yes... I, too, let that happen. It can be very frustrating at times. I hope you find your motivation. I would love to have company on this journey, so if you need encouragement or just want to set a small goal, you've got me here to nudge you along. Like Cathy said... 2 minutes... I can do anything for 2 minutes. Best of luck to you!
Just not my time. I have to deal with some personal issues before I can concentrate on myself. I appreciate the offer and hope that I can take you up on it some day.
I totally understand. It has to be the right time for you. This is my time. I just wish it was easier.....
Keep going Peg! The view from that bridge when you're walking it is AMAZING! You have a realistic goal leading you on.
Do remember that it's ok to take a rest day now and again to give your body a break to recover a little bit.
2013:
New Year's Color Run (5k) - 01/01/13
Oshkosh Half-Marathon - 04/21/13
Thanks for the encouragement OshCat! As for the taking a day off here and there... UGGHHH.. I have been. It's hard to find balance in this journey. I'm all in or all out. The last few days have been all out. It does nothing but disappoint myself. Ahh.. but the glass really is half full....right? I scheduled my workouts for this week. I'm planning some meals. I'm trying to make it fool proof. Or at least easier to succeed. They honeymoon is over... now the trek begins.... keeping myself going on a daily basis.
As for now.. I'll remember what you said.. "the view from that bridge is AMAZING"... and I want to taste that sweetness of making it to the other side....
Thanks,
Peg
