The water for this Saturday's sprint tri has blue green algae. Because of it, they will have the tri as well as a duathlon option. I did a half in April and 4 previous sprint tris but never a duathlon.
I get hives from scented laundry soap/softeners, so I'm thinking I should do the duathlon. The duathlon will be 2 mi run, 10 mi bike, 3 mi run.
Will my body be prepared for those distances if I've been training for a swim, bike and run?
Thursday is my last training day. The plan was to get in the pool, but should I be running then biking? Or doing something else? If so, what and for how long?
What else should I be prepared for physically and/or mentally?
How thick is the algae? It can be a bit "icky" to swim in with it clinging to your hands, feet and googles but it isn't harmful. I would think you would know if your are allergic. You can always wait a few seconds and swim behind those breaking through the algae mats. You should be fine if you decide on the duathlon if you have been consistently training with 3-5 mile runs. The first run is usually faster but watch your pace. Biking off the run is a lot easier than running off the bike. If you have doing bricks you will have a good feel for the second run. On a Thursday before a Saturday race (assuming the duathlon), you should do a light run and bike (in either order but you may want to see how it feels to bike after the run) just to stretch the legs in both. Don't go too hard for very long although a couple of hard intervals are ok.

About 15 of us opted for the duathlon - 2 mi run, 10 mi bike, 3 mi run. Two of the men had bad previous experiences with blue green algae after two different tris, which made me feel better about not swimming. This was 5 hours from home for me, so I didn't see the water condition until the morning of. It didn't look scummy or smell bad, but I just didn't want to risk it, especially since I had to drive 5 hours home solo.
My first run was a really good time for me, so I now I know what pace I'm capable of doing for at least 2 miles. It was hotter and more humid than I would have liked. I tried hard to train at different times of day to account for that.
My bike was one of my better times, though it seemed to take longer than usual for my legs to get going. The beginning and end of the bike course was very serpentine. My second run did me in - I did walk some in the 1/4-1/2 mile area. I did jog, but I often felt like I was just walking fast and swinging my arms. My time for the run leg was definitely the worst in all of my tris. I went in figuring it would be a good learning experience regardless of what happened and it was.
For my last training day, I ran a mile, jumped on my bike, then ran a 1/4 mi.
My sleeping pattern the night before an event is pretty fitful, more so when I travel out of town (I think I'm fearful of oversleeping). I'm not particularly achy or extremely fatigued - I'm usually one with the sofa after any event for a good snooze.
Now I know to be physically and mentally prepared for later season events for blue green algae.
