Re: Being Harrased
Most of my incidents have been on my road bike (I do most of my running on trails). These were all in Indiana too. Colorado drivers seem to be much more civil and tolerant of runners/cyclists. These were all unprovoked.

- Full bottles of beer/soda thrown at me from a moving car (numerous occasion). They really hurt.
- Water thrown on me from a moving car
- A van drove by and the back doors opened and they rolled the spare tire out at us. Missed by a mile, it was actually so weird it was kinda funny.
- Shot point blank with a BB gun from a passing car (I almost sh*t myself at the time because I didn't know it was only BB gun)
- Sprayed with pepper spray by a bunch of teenage girls in a passing car.
- Waiting at a red light to make a left turn one day, and the lady behind me bumps me and knocks me off my bike, then lays into the horn and starts yelling at me to get the **** out of the road. She had to be in her late 60s. Bizarre.

After the BB gun incident I started carrying a gun, I figured it was only a matter of time until someone tried to kill me. Thankfully I was able to give that practice up when I moved.

Re: Being Harrased
Maybe I'm just really lucky but I've never had any problems like this running. I live in a mountain town where most people live a very active lifestyle so I wouldn't expect it here but I've also travelled and run in Peru, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Chile and the Bahamas and never gotten anymore than odd looks.

Yeah, well, when I lived in my old hoodrat town I had a dozen bagels thrown at me. And they were perfectly good with poppy seeds. Made me pretty hungry. Being where I lived, I'm surprised that's all that happened.

Re: Being Harrased
I had a little pit bull mix run after me yesterday. I run with a German Shepherd/Lab mix dog, about 90 lbs. That little dog got about 10 feet from my heels and my dog turned around and did a little growl and bark...that dog yelped and ran fast in the direction he came.

It was pretty funny, but you had to be there .....you know.

But I do like running with a big dog, for saftey reasons. She would bite me if I ever tried running without her.

Re: Being Harrased
OK, I've never been on the receiving end of anything, but I usually run around 7 in the morning, so no problem there.

But, the other afternoon, I gave a felow runner a hard time by accident. I had stopped the snowblower in the middle of the road to talk to my wife, when a runner came by. I didn't see her, till I hit the auger lever. She got a face full of snow. Luckily, not much snow was thrown out.
Even more luckily, she wasn't hurt. She just kept on running. didn't even flip me the bird. Of course, I would have deserved it.

Re: Being Harrased
I have had a bottle thrown at me from a car, been honked at, yelled at, almost hit by cars, and attacked by dogs. For a short time I carried a nice stick with me in case I had to fight off a dog. There is nothing worse than to be running down the sidewalk and an unleashed dog comes after you. One time this happened and I prepared to defend myself; the dog owners looked at my like I was the villian.

Re: Being Harrased
I was on a business trip in Paris. Because of the jet lag, I was always awake very early in the early in the morning. With nothing better to do, I ran. Usually around 4 or 5 am. Every morning, people were leaving the clubs. Most were somewhat intoxicated and couldn't figure out what a person would be doing running through the streets of Paris so early (or late) in the day. I was chased many times by unrulely bar patrons and was quite scared. The only saving grace was that I could generally outrun most of them and that many would fall flat on their faces in their attempts. I can't imagine what would've happened if one of them had caught me.

Re: Being Harrased
Have I been harassed while running? Most of the time I am too oblivious to notice. Though I wanted to hand this A-hole woman a Darwin award once.

I was crossing the street, and I guess because I made her stop at a stop sign ( I didn't force her to a screeching halt- she stopped her car and I simply jogged across) she began screaming at me, calling me a "f**king b***h, and other pleasantries, with her young child in the back seat mimicking her words at me. Needless to say, her behavior made me feel a bit partial to eugenics. That was appalling.

I guess some people when they drive feel all powerful, and get road rage. It feels good for them to scream, and swear at lowly joggers and pedestrians because they are protected by 2500lbs of steel and can drive away.

Now that I have taken nordic walking I have heard one too many times, "hey lady you dropped your skis."

Re: Being Harrased
Why in the world would people throw things at a runner? That's horrific. They're probably just jealous because they can't run, but still. I'd kick some one's a** if they even attempted to throw something at me.
