What time will i be able to run in the marathon

I have done my marathon training for 11 weeks now, and just had my first 20 miler over the weekend. I have been running my long runs at LSD pace for once. I know what my goal pace is, a 3:10 marathon at 7:14 pace. I have been running my long runs around 8:30-8:40 the last couple weeks. I ran a 5k in may at 18:55 and some other races that said I could run at 3:04 marathon, but I haven't run anything in a while that suggests I can hold a 3:10 marathon pace. I originally was going to do a 1/2 marathon this coming weekend but it was way too expensive. I do have a 6 miler on saturday that I was thinking of going all out and making it a 6.2 miler (10k) to see how that time translates. Is that a good idea?

    When is the marathon?  I think that would determine whether it's a good idea to run the 10K or not.  Honestly, I can't see a reason not to as long as you give yourself enough time to rest before the marathon.  Good luck to you!!

    In my marathon training plan, each week after the 20-miler (there are three in my plan) is a 12-mile "rest" week.  I actually try to run these at marathon pace, to get used to sustaining the actual pace.  A lot of advanced marathon plans will also recommned that you run your last 20-25% of the LSD's at marathon pace, too.  So, on your next 20-miler ramp up your last 4 or 5 miles to your race pace, and see if you can maintain.  This will help give you an indication if you're meeting your goal.

    Looking at your times it looks like you are really close if not already there.  Running Times has a link on their website for race conversions so you can see how fast you run in one distance will likely predict what you would in another distance.  Also, look up "Yasso 800's" -- they are great indicators to where your full marathon time will be.  Sorry I don't have the links available right now. This is the best I can do while at work!

    The best indicator of your fitness is an effort that's close to the marathon. I don't recommend doing a marathon or 20 miler at MP, but you may want to do a half-marathon 4-6 weeks out from the marathon. Unfortunately 5k times are usually wildly inaccurate at predicting your marathon finish time - they're usually too generous.


    Specific workouts like long tempo's or hard long runs will be your best indicator. Good luck!

    Jason, from your times, it sounds like you have very good speed.  This doesn't always translate into a fast marathon time, however.  Is this your first marathon?  If so, I wouldn't try to race it for time.  I'd just try to finish it.  It's going to be considerably harder than you might think. 


    I'm also a little concerned about the pace of your long runs.  If you plan to run a 7:14 pace in the race, why are you running your long runs at 8:30-8:40?  They should be more like 7:45-8:00.  You should also be doing long runs of up to half marathon distance at your race pace of 7:14.


    Just as an example, I'm a 3:29 marathoner and I ran an 18 miler today at an 8:30 pace, which I thought was slow for me.
