For hills or any point where I'm thinking it's challenging, I rely on Bill Murray's motto in "What About Bob?" -- "baby steps". "Baby steps up the hill, baby steps up the hill" has the added bonus of reminding me to shorten my stride and increase my turnover, and the next thing you know I'm over the top without a struggle. (I've only been at this since April, and my previous running experience -- 20 years ago -- was as strength and endurance training for volleyball, so getting up a hill efficiently was not the goal, and thus I've been retraining myself....) This motto also makes me quickly move on to a mental image of Bill Murray strapped to the mast of a boat shouting "I'm sailing!!!" which never fails to crack me up.
But he finally got it through my head that the real purpose of running isn't to win a race. It's to test to the limits of the human heart.

I enjoyed reading through this post...lots of good quotes! My husband, a former Marine, often says "Pain is weakness leaving the body." That quote did come to mind as I was running my first 5K last weekend.

Also, I think of my friends who presently are too ill to run, who would love to feel the breeze in their hair, their hearts pounding, their muscles aching. I run for those who can't.
And, when charging up a hill, or when everything in my body is screaming to quit, my mental coach is shouting, "YES YOU CAN!" COME ON!! KEEP GOING!! YOU'RE ALMOST THERE!!!"
I am not last, I am ahead of those who never started...
