My last run was...how was yours?

Ran the Camp Lael 5K this morning and won the race! There was little to no competition at all, but this may be the only race I ever win in my life, so I'm counting it. The race was listed on the active.com website among others, so it isn't my fault that it wasn't well attended by runners. They were invited but few came (there were many more walkers than runners).

The course was primarily gravel and dirt roads, had some very steep inclines and consisted of 3 loops of the same course, making the hills that much worse. I finished with a time of 26:06, but I think I would now be a couple minutes faster on a more "standard" road 5k course. I dropped over 6 minutes from my time just one year ago.

Overall, it was a good but not great run. I do not have experience in leading a race (other than last years race, where I led for the first half of the race before finishing 4th) and I think I probably was a little complacent the latter part of this race, knowing that I was ahead of the next runner by a wide margin. Legs felt good, breathing was excellent, but had to deal with minor to moderate midsection pains through much of the race.

My first half marathon is in three weeks. I will not win that race and will probably not even finish in the top 2/3 of my age group, but I am looking forward to it!

Nicely done, Protometal!  If you signed up and ran it, then if you come in first that's a win!

I ran easy runs Monday through Thursday, while recovering from last Saturday's marathon.  Kicked it up yesterday with 8 miles of trails, then 12 road miles this morning, with tempo paces and fartlek mixed in the middle.  I'll be back to a normal training schedule next week, leading up to my last 20-miler of the training program on Saturday.  It's almost taper time!  Woo!

    Happy running, everyone!

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

My run yesterday was soooo good...I'm a convert now to the Galloway walk/run training program...I downloaded his Ultimate 10K app to my iphone and it's so awesome...I've always been a slow steady plodder at about a 14 min/mi. Just got back into my running a year and a half ago...prior to did many runs through the 80s, 90s and early 2000s...always prided myself on 'running' those runs and also with my training but at least with the training runs I'm now convinced that Galloway's walk/run training is so much better for me.  I'm 57 and my times are better and I physically feel better after my runs.  Love having him coaching me all the way too.  It doesn't get any better than that!  Have only done the last two runs with the Galloway method but love that he tells me when to walk and when to start running again...makes it so easy.

@RunningQueen - you'll be fine for your 5K - don't be afraid to take it easy.

@runslowdan - I hope your Achilles heals soon.

    @Protometal - a win is a win!  congratulations!

@Dreamstate - good job on your Half!

I ran my first 5K this morning.  I thought I was going out nice and easy - I was quite capable of conversation - the only time I walked was to drink 1/2 a Dixie cup of water (I found out I can't drink while running - can you guess where the other 1/2 of the water went? LOL)  Obviously I was going faster than I thought because I finished in 32:14.   Woohoo!  My training runs were all 34 to 37 minutes.  Nothing like race day adrenaline.  I can see why people do this.    I am icing my ankle now but this too shall pass.

Haven't posted in a while...then again nothing to post...BUT today I did the 9/11 Heroes Run 5k at South Park, PA and PRd with a 27:34 taking 1:24 off my time (5/21 in AG).  I ran the entire race behind a wounded marine carrying a big American flag, and his leg in a full length stablelizer...motivating for sure...so were the firemen running in full gear.

And the bonus:  Kicked my friend's @$$!!!!  Bummed that 3 people bailed on me though, oh well.  I had a great time, great run and great company among strangers

@Protometal - Congrats on the win!!!

@Debm2011 - congrats on your first 5K!  Nice time!  I have a hard enough time squirting water in my mouth from my water bottle.  Don't know how I will do with a cup.  I'm sure I will have a similar story.

Ran two miles this evening.  Knee feels okay (fell on Wednesday), but I just felt too sluggish to run another mile so I walked another 1.5 miles.  Hoping it was just the weather and the fact that I didn't wait long enough after dinner before my run.  I plan on running Wednesday and that be my last day I run before my first 5K on Saturday.  Hoping that is enough before the race.  Last time I ran 3 miles was Wednesday the 7th.  My goal is to finish and run the entire race. Would like to be under 35 minutes which has been my best time so far.

My last run was...how was yours?

@Dreamstate, you're officially a half marathoner? Awesome!!! Congratulations. I'll be joining you soon, Oct. 2nd. Can hardly wait.

So, I took it pretty easy last week. I've been having some pain in my left knee and I don't want to injure myself before my first half, so I scaled back on my runs. After my PR in Monday's 10k, I only did cross training for the rest of the week and ran on the treadmill once. I ran again on Saturday with my running club and it felt effortless. I could tell my body really enjoyed that break. I was going for 3, but ended up doing 5.84 at a very comfortable pace. Then for today's long run, my running club ran the actual course of the Atlanta 13.1, which will be my first half on Oct 2nd. I usually pace myself with a girl from the group that is training for her first full in Dec. Today was her 15 mile day, but I was just going to do the 13.1 course. We ran at a really comfortable pace so I thought, what the heck, I can hang for a couple more miles. We ended up going 16.11. I never intended to run that far today and while I feel happy that I could do it, I am worried about overtraining. I don't want to hurt myself or do anything that could threaten my performance before my first half. So, while I did 16.11 and it was great, in the back of my head I keep asking, "Did I do too much?" I guess time will tell. The good thing about this, though, is that now I'm considering continuing to train after my half and go for a full early next year. I actually felt like a distance runner today and that was amazing. I used GU Chomps for the first time, had been using the gel which I was already in love with, but the chomps were freakin awesome. Consumed a pack prior to running and didn't need to refuel on gel during the run. I had lots of energy. I'm thinking I'll do the Chomps for my half and run with my fuel belt and a gel just in case. I'm planning to rest tomorrow and take either a Yoga or Pilates class to help me stretch.

Congrats to everyone on this weekend's runs.

My last run was...how was yours?

Haven't posted in quite a while.  Struggling with injuries and haven't been able to run consistently.  Then got diagnosed with exertinal asthma and early COPD.  I've been having a hard time with breathing cause I start wheezing pretty bad to the point of getting dizzy and developing a pounding headache - probably from hypoxia.  Oh well, this past Sat I used my inhaler immediately prior to running (plus it was 60 with low humidity) and had a fabulous run.  Did a whole 5K.  My phone turned off so I don't have my time, but it felt good.  Maybe I've now got the rhythm down.

My last run was...how was yours?

My long Sunday run was not good this week.  I did my first mile but then my legs decided they were unhappy and really did not want to run any more.  I fought back and forth with them for the next 2 miles forcing them to do some running intervals, but the final mile I gave in and let them just walk me back home  .  I guess lucky for me I had just read an article from Coach Jenny about accepting Bad runs as part of the whole training package so it helped me not beat myself up too badly.  Thinking on it more, I probably should have eaten something before I went out.  I don't usually eat before my Sunday run but my eating patterns on Saturday were not normal so now I'm thinking that's why I had such trouble.

This coming Saturday I have a 5k race, and I am telling myself it will go much better than that!

@Debm - I'm glad to hear you were able to not only complete the 5K but beat your time expectations. I also find that in races I go faster than I think I'm capable of.

Congrats everyone else on your races!

I'm still training - Had a great  7-mile run Saturday, followed by 3 miles Sunday. My body could have run more, but I had to get home. Lately life has been cutting my runs short. I think I need to wake up earlier in the morning.

My last run was...how was yours?

OshCat, great way to look at the bad run. We all have them and it's important to learn what you can and keep getting better. I have serious issues with carbs, I'm scared of gaining weight so I keep my intake low. However, in training for my half, I've found that carb loading the day before my long runs has helped my endurance tremendously. I don't go crazy, just one carb loaded meal that's early enough to allow my body to turn it into the energy it needs. This past Saturday, I had pancakes and they were sooooo good. Can't tell you the last time I had pancakes! Then I woke up early Sunday, had a small Greek yogurt, a cup of coffee and took my GU chomps before my long run. It all worked out great. Start experimenting with what types of foods help you perform better on your long runs and make it part of your ritual. Good luck on your 5k. You will rock it!
