    Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

    Hi All,

I've been a member on here for a bit but have been a little inactive, just browsing around. Was happy to find this thread. I've been running for about 3 years now. I had lost about 60lbs and decided to start running. At first, I was all about trying to see how fast I could go, and kept getting so frustrated as I just am not fast. But we have so many good, fast runners in my community, I just stressed myself out.  My best mile I ran in 10 minutes, and my best race was a 10K at an 11:15 pace.  But I felt like crap afterward. I ran a half marathon a year ago in Chicago at a 13:12 pace. I was disappointed in that and stopped running or doing much of anything for a few months and gained 25 pounds.

I started back earlier this year with working out and running, lost that 25 pounds. I'm still a little over 200lbs so I'm still a heavier runner. But I now have a new outlook. I decided it was so stupid to let myself get down about something so stupid. The half marathon time was fabulous, and I should be proud of that. When I started running again, I told myself my focus is going to be enjoying every run. Not huffing and puffing and panting and wearing myself out. Now when I run, I put on slow music and start slow. My first mile probably averages 14 minutes. Then once I feel warm, I move it up to between 12:00 and 13:30 depending on the terrain and how long the run will be. I still take my garmin out with me to track distance and pace, but I run based on my breathing more than pace.

We are all runners! Even "woggers"! We should all be very proud of what we can do because every once in a while I'll see someone who is wheelchairbound and I know they'd LOVE to do what any of us can do. I absolutely enjoy my runs. I have time to see little animals around and enjoy the scenery and notice things I never noticed before when I was too busy panting. I am aware of the temperature, how my clothes feel, how my feet feel, that I'm relaxed and have good form, etc. Next thing you know, 5, 6, 7 miles have gone by.

I do sign up for races every once in a while to keep me going. I look for fun, low-stress races that I know will have a lot of walkers so I don't have that irrational fear of finishing last (and even if you do, so what!). My next race is approximately 8.5 mile trail run. I ran the course this past weekend and it took me over 2 hours. Trails are crazy! But it was so beautiful and scenic and I enjoyed it. The fun about this race is that the 8.5 milers start at the same time the 33 mile ultrarunners start...that means I have a 9 hour time limit! No pressure, no stress, and there will be runners ahead and behind me. I finished 3 from last at my only other trail run last year, and I was really proud of having done it.

I look forward to wogging, penguining, jogging = RUNNING with all of you!

    Runner since 2009.

I used to run to get faster, but got tired of pushing it, panting and feeling disappointed.

Now I run to relax and enjoy, around a 12:30 - 13:00 average pace.

Starting to get into trail running - way slower, but highly enjoyable.

Try to run 15-20mi per week and spin 4-7 times per week.

    Best race paces:

    1 mile - 10:12

    5K - 11:34

    4mi - 11:32

    10K - 11:15

    Half Marathon - 13:20

I wear New Balance running gear (they have many choices in XXL, size 18).

I wear Moving Comfort heavy duty bras.

I wear New Balance 769/760/860 for stability and cushion.

I wear New Balance 904 for trails.

    Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

@ ChubbyRunrGrl--AGREE, AGREE, AGREE!!!  Very well said!!  I enjoy my time spent on the road (and it's a good thing I do, since it takes me so long )  I have embraced my penginness, and now only "race" against myself, the clock, and the demons inside who insist that I can't do it.  I learned that finishing last in a race is not the end of the world--it is still a finish, and there is a lot of support, encouragement, and cheering for us penguins at the end.  I enjoy the out and back courses for races because I get the best of both worlds--I get to enjoy the race the way I run it, and I get to cheer on the gazelles at the front of the pack.

I look forward to my runs and my races--my runs for the serenity and sanity I feel during the run, and the races for the opportunity to enjoy fellowship with other runners and to push myself a bit harder than I do during training runs.  And, I enjoy the sense of accomplishment I get from both races and runs!!

    @eaglemom:

I wasn't able to embrace my style until our community started a "Sole Sisters" running group. They promoted the group to female runners, woggers and walkers-to-someday-runners, all levels. We have had a huge amount of interest - the first night, 70 local women showed up. We all ran one mile, and at the end, the whole crowed waited and cheered for the very last walker to finish and that's how we've been every run since. Our largest group of women run at a 12 minute pace and higher. It's so nice to be around other slower runners!

I'm looking at doing another half marathon, maybe in April or May. The problem is many of these halfs have cutoffs. My first half was the Chicago half and they kept saying they had a strict 13 minute pace cutoff, and there would be a bus to pick everyone up who falls behind that pace halfway into the race. I didn't see that until after I registered. So I freaked out about it during training because all of my training runs were done without much regard to pace, I just wanted to get the mileage in. I manged to finish in about 2hrs 50 minutes, dead, exhausted, and I didn't see a darn bus! Looks like maybe I should find a half that has a full marathon attached to it running the similar course, so the cutoff is way liberal.

@ ChubbyRunrGrl--I thought about manipulating my vacation this year to do the Va Beach RnR Half, but the time limit scared me, so I just let things be.  I want to run in a few Rock and Roll Halfs, but I will have to get a half or two in my legs first, so that I have some more confidence and (maybe) some faster times.  The one I am doing does have a marathon, too.  I am pretty sure some of the first marathoners will finish before I do!!!!  That might be a bit demoralizing....

Is anyone else having problems getting their display name to show instead of their real name? I've done everything I can think of to get it to change back and sent in a question to Active but haven't gotten a response. I have "MouseRN" entered in the Display Name box and saved it and still it doesn't show on my posts. I know some of you have been able to fix the issue. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Thank you for making this thread! I started the C25k program back in May. I'll be running my first 5k on October 9th, 2011 in long beach. As I think back when I couldn't run even 3 minutes without gasping for air and now I can run 3.1 miles without stopping, I still can't beleive it as I'm sure alot of you have felt the same way about your runs. I always hated long distance running, was never good at it in jr. high and high school but decided I'd try the c25k and I love it. I'm running 3.1 miles three times a week to prepare myself for the 5k as well as doing some cross training, biking and walking. I'm 223 lbs and I'm averaging around 3.4 mph runs where right now I feel like its a good stride for me. I try not to get caught up in the numbers, I'm running a 54 minute 5k and hoping to improve that to at least somewhere in the 40-50mins by oct. 9th.

Gotta love my husband - he cant run due to his knees but he can ride his bike and he rides it along side of me while I run and motivates me so much. I wish you all great success in your running program and upcoming runs! Excited and nervous about my first 5k!! This thread has been a blessing to this penguin!

Since the upgrade, your name appears only to you. (Try logging out and take a look at your posts.) All I see is your MouseRN screen name.

Your name isn't getting spread all over the Interwebtubes (at least not because of your activities here).

Good Luck on your first 5K! and Welcome to this thread. For some reason i haven't been getting e-mail notifications of posts so I haven't written in a while. I ran my first 10K today!! My husband runs but had to work laast night so he came as my chauffeur and cheering partner. He's one of the good ones too!

Well, I ran my 2nd 5K yesterday. Unfortunately I finished +5:34 mins over my time for my first 5K with a 42:12/13:35mm pace (which is in my normal training pace range). I have been having some knee/ITBS issues over the last couple of weeks and wore a fully adjustable knee brace for the first time rather than the neoprene knee sleeve I normally use...I think I may have had it adjusted too tight because I was having hamstring issues that I've never had before. Had a difficult time even keeping a 1:1 timed interval due to the hamstring discomfort. Oh well, I have a chance to redeem myself next week at the Race for a Cure. Crossing my fingers that the knees stop bothering me and that my time is better on that run!

BTW, thanks to all who voted for me for the Refuel with Chocolate Milk grant campaign. Unfortunately I didn't receive enough votes for the $250 grant that I had planned to donate to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. I may be trying to get it again next month, but I haven't made up my mind.

Happy running to all! Be safe and train smart!

    Calling all Penguins (slow runners)

Just checked--I am officially registered for the Empire State Half Marathon!!  It kind of scared me to see my name there....

Looking at the calendar, I only have one more weekend for a long run before it is time to taper.  Sooo--Friday/Saturday is the day--12 miles, give or take a 1/4 or so.  My family is being very supportive, which is great at this point since I am already having pre-race jitters.  I know I have done the training and the work, but I really do suffer from bad jitters before every race.  I don't really have a time goal--I just want to finish and get my bling!!!  We do have an Apple Harvest Party at my DH's cousin's that afternoon--lots of good food, and all the apples/fresh cider you could want.  It will be good for "race recovery"--and a chance to wear my bling and show off a bit, since there aren't any runners that I know of going to the party.

On the down side, I have been having a pretty achy "ankle"--actually above the anke, around where I have the plate from a broken ankle a few years ago.  I am hoping it is just from the rainy/wet weather we have been having.  In another 3 weeks, I can deal with an injury--but not until then!!!!!!!

Just ran my 1st 10K and can't imagine 13miles!! You're awesome!  Wishing you beautiful weather for your race!

So much of running seems mental. I've been learning to relax more with Chi running techniques and it has helped me alot. Hopefully I'll get up to a HM eventually too!
