Always excuses

Work sucks, shcool, I'm tired, toenail is falling off, I can't feel my legs. Ya I'm full of them. A few weeks ago I completed the Wasatch 100. Something that I took from that is, it doesn't matter if you get it done in style, just get it done. I've been filling my book of excuses with all kinds of crap to stay off the road. What about recovery? I have been running smaller runs on road, but nothing long. Well last weekend I did about 18 or so on road. I was a little worried about being conditioned for asphalt. And what about my speed? I've got about 300 miles on my New Balance 890's. I usually run in Mizuno's wave riders and they can handle extra mileage. I was very pleased to discover that the 890's have shown little to no wear. They are obviously dirty and certainly lost there new shoe smell, but they feel great. My road miles have flown by effortlessly. I haven't felt the aftermath I usually feel (even on tempo's) when I run in New Balance. If I can only keep them off the trail. With New York coming up and Boston on the horizon, I'm excited to see how much mileage I can get out of them and where they will take me.
@525... so when you are getting your miles in on the road you have been running in NB? I know each person differs with which shoes, I've just been looking for feedback about different ones. I started out running in NB - they were a couple years old so I went with new Nikes.. they've done pretty well but it seems on my longer runs - like 8 and above, my feet really start to hurt around then. I'm not sure if it's because I'm just not used to the miles or the shoes.. maybe both.
EXCUSES!!! Yes, I can always find one and justify anything - including the food I eat. Which is probably why I don't drop any lbs. I have even thought before, well I walked around the mall a lot so do I really need to run? HAHA...

Hey I just started a thread with problems I'm having from a new pair Nike's. I'm hoping the pain I'm getting is due to the shoes slightly correcting the way my foot was stiking before. They fitted me for a 1/2 size bigger than what I have been wearing for several years. I was told that you want the extra 1/2 for a running shoe. I find my toes move around more with the new shoes and will take some breaking in before all the pain is gone.
@run4choclt, I'm a pretty big advocate for guttin through the pain and making it happen. The only down side to that is you're likely to get unnecessary injuries. When I first started looking for a shoe that worked for me I tried about every brand. I did run in Nike Pegasus. They were my 10th pair of shoes, so they were free. I was glad I didn't spend any money on them. Being the cheap a** I am I still got all my miles out of them and I regretted it. They might be great shoes for some, but they weren't my cup of tea. I need a shoe that I can do a 5k or a 50k. Obviously everyone is designed differently, but neither I nor my friends, have had any issues with NB. 890's. I'd dust those bad boys off and take them around the block a few dozen times. If they feel right, give the updated model a shot. I've read they have a new minimal trail shoe... maybe Santa (aka, my wife) will hook me up?![]()
@gvicknair. Some pain is normal. If it was pain free everyone would do it. I think we are all a little disturbed and need that pain. However you have to know the difference between necessary pain and shoes that just don't work. I've noticed that some brands run a little larger or smaller than others. Some are only in European sizes so the salesman usually takes an educated guess on what will work for you. Typically I do buy a 1/2 size larger, but I don't have issues with foot pain. My NB 890's are a 1/2 bigger. My trail shoes are smaller. I kinda like a comfort fit. If the toenails start falling off... go bigger. If you stash extra gu's in your shoes... probably need to go smaller. Good luck, don't let it keep you inside.
@525...I hear you about getting thru the pain. I'm the same way when I'm nearing a goal. I make myself just do it. So far, I have been lucky on not getting an injury...which makes me think maybe I'm just being a wuss and it's okay to push myself a little!
I have heard as well to go up a half size. Mine aren't quite a half size bigger so maybe that is it.

I have never sone such a run, but I would think that your body would play all sorts of tricks on you to discourage you from subjecting it to more punishment after all the stress of a 100 mile race. It's another whole strength you need to develop, this returning to training. Good for you, though, to keep on despite.
As for shoes...wow, what a drag - not only do you have to run so bloody far, but you have to carry those great, heavy SHOES all that way, too. You're a lot tougher than I am, for sure!
