Chew gum or not to chew??

I've done the pebble in the mouth trick while backpacking and it does help if you pick the right rock.  I also have used hard candies (Werthers or life savers) to provide moisture when water was scarce.  Haven't tried it for running though.

I've chewed on a piece of grass to help keep my mouth moist. I usually do it when I'm running low on water. It seems to help. I don't really like gum cause i get sick of chewing it and it makes my stomach feel empty.

I ALWAYS run with gum.... 2miler, 5K, 10K or Half Marathon!  I find that it not only keeps my mouth from drying out it helps with my breathing as well.  On the rare occasion I have ran without it; I find that I am really sucking wind.  I also will carry an extra piece or 2 on my longer runs. I usually have anything mint just because the flavor seems to last longer.  What can I say; it's worked for me 20+ years!

Chew gum or not to chew??

This is my first full year of running, after running in a few summer races last year, and today I ran my first cold-weather race (39 degrees at start, Yarmouth, ME Pumpkin Run 5k). I swished some Gatorade before the start, thinking I'd be OK. The race didn't have an official water stop, but there was a family with a table set up somewhere around the first mile mark. I figured I'd be OK, and since it was only mile one, I passed. Around mile 2 I started to get a dry mouth, but not like a warm-weather feeling. The colder air gave me a different dry mouth feeling, with a cold and dry bottom lip, and there were no more water stops to help.

I'm not sure gum is my answer, especially Polar Ice or anything sounding cold, but in cold weather I think I may try something next time, maybe in a 10k next Sat. Maybe the mints was a good idea.

Chew gum or not to chew??

I don't chew while running for a few reasons.  I'll usually chew gum because I'm bored or I crave something sweet (but don't want too many calories).  Neither of these are the case when I'm running.  Chewing gum would definitely make breathing during my hard efforts more difficult.  Lastly, the sweet taste of gum tends to make me even thirstier.

I do get thirsty from running and a dry mouth.  This is normal, and to be expected, and doesn't bother me.

I have occasionally chewed gum, but rarely, usually on very long ones.

Please help choose the cover for a running book...

I'm putting a promo cover for my NEXT book "Running Scared" (a collection of stories) in my debut novel "Harvest of the Heart". -> <- PLEASE help me pick that promo cover by clicking that link. It is free and no pop-ups will bother you. You can do it anonymously if you want and the covers are incredible! I had a lot of trouble narrowing them down to eight. The artists had a free hand, only a description of the stories in the book to inspire them.

THANK YOU so much for your help!
