I ran for 33 minutes tonight.  I'm looking for a 5k in my area, but they're all so expensive.  Funding is really tight for me and I just can't afford to pay $35.00 and up.  It's really hard to fork over my hard earned money for something I can do for free.

    Happy running everyone.

Lori, have you ever heard of sparkpeople.com? i recommend joining this website...its free.  they offer a "virtual" 5k every week, but they also hook you up with "teams" in your area.  Alot of teams meet to run the "virtual" 5k together.  SO you don't get to run an organized 5k with hundreds of people, but you can at least run with "strangers" and maybe make a friend or two.  Then you head over to the website and log your time...at the end of the day, it shows you your rankings by event, sex, and age group.  Best of all, it is free.

Luckily we've had some 5Ks around here that are just $25, and I almost always get a really nice tech material shirt. So I justify it a bit by realizing that it's one less workout shirt I need to purchase!

I did run today, just 2 miles. I did it on the treadmill since it looked like it was going to pour at any moment. Of course it never did, though...lol. I have a 10K on Sunday, so this was my last running day before the race. I had it at a 12min/mile pace, and it actually felt so comfortable! This is HUGE for me, since I used to struggle with a 14min/mile pace.

Thanks abbynormal, I checked out sparkpeople.com and I love it.

I've been in kind of a funk the last 2 weeks.  I can't seem to get motivated to run.  I've been working alot of overtime and it's dark when I leave home and dark when I get home, so I haven't been able to run outside and the treadmill just seemed like too much effort.

HELP!!! If anyone has any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

    Thanks,
    Lori

Lori- I just had to swap over to the treadmill. Here's a few things that work for me. Luckily my gym is at work. So I bring my gym bag with me and in order to go home I have to hit the gym first. Secondly, I usually do some sort of speed monitoring. I looked at a lot of my recent runs outside and tried to figure out what my "natural" pace was for similar distance. I'll often start 0.1 or 0.2 mph slower than that for the first x minutes, and then I'll have a goal that x minues or x miles into it I increase to +0.1 and +0.2 mph. I'm also a podcast junky, though I use them on my weekend outside runs as well. I try to "save" some of my favorites for the treadmill, and tell myself I can't listen to them unless I'm running. That's another motivation. Good luck, maybe other people will have some good suggestions as well.

Arrggh!  Still nursing a torn hamstring. Doc says I can run in Nov--which is tomorrow, technically speaking. But test runs the last couple of days show no pain on the flat; lots of pain on the hills.  This hammie is still not ready.

    I Ran today.... Did You?

There seem to be a lot of 5k races today.  I ran my first one ever, a benefit for Alzheimers here in Chambersburg.  It was a beautiful day but cold (31 deg.).  I warmed up a little walking the dog around the last mile of the course, but then froze again waiting for the race to start.  The heated bathroom was a blessing.  I don't know how many runners there were, but I was # 287 and we got there over an hour early, so I expect about 400 people in all.  A lot of them were walkers, and there was a children's one mile run as well, which was fun to watch.  Some of them were fast!  On the 5K, there were a dozen or so really fast runners who went all out, but most were just out for a fun run.  From overheard conversations, I wasn't the only one running for the first time.  I found a couple of people whose pace I could almost match and ended up going much faster than I expected: I finished in 30m. 13 sec.  I've done 10 minute miles on the treadmill before, but only for 2 or 3 minutes at a time.  My usual indoor pace is 5.5 and my outdoor pace is closer to 5.0.  I guess it's true what they say about races being different.  The course was an easy one with only a couple of gentle climbs/descents.  Only problem was my lungs - I ended up coughing for about 45 minutes after I finished.  I don't know whether that was the cold or the faster than usual pace. I never had to walk and never even slowed down much, so I think it was just all the phlegm from the cold.  My handkerchief got a lot of use today!  I finished the run feeling really good.  I hoped for 35 minutes - 30 was a real shock.  I fretted a lot about doing this run, worried I wouldn't be able to run the whole thing or that I would do something stupid that would show my inexperience - instead I had fun and ran well.  Hurray!

I ran the Chicago Hot Chocolate 5K, and set a PR!! My "unofficial" results say 36:05, which I'm really happy with since my best time before that was 38:28. And this was super-congested at the start (walkers weren't following instructions to be at the back of the pack), so it took me a bit to hit my stride. Oh, and I ran the whole darn thing!!
