I am also a newbie that is road bike shopping - I am considering the Giant OCR3 and the Trek 1000. Both are in about the same price range and got much better reviews then the K2.

But I have been advised to test ride everything in my price range and decide by which bike is the most comfortable for my riding style.

Don't buy a bike without test driving it. Different brands, and different style bikes have different dimesions. For instance, a 52cm touring bike is quite different from a 52cm TT bike. Have your bike professionally fitted to you. Your local bike shop will do this for free if you buy the bike from them, if you don't they'll usually do it for a fee between $40 and $200 depending on their methods. There's a fit shop out in AZ somewhere that is supposed to be awesome.

I am doing my first trialthon in a few weeks and I am using the K2 Mach 1. I really like it and think it is a great starter bike.
