Im looking for a kick *** brand of brown rice that is powered with nutrients and isn't that crap that is so modified it lacks nutrients but also that doesn't take 5 hours to cook. However, I will cook it that long if I have to. I just need some good brands. I don't have a trader joe's near me-- I do have a Whole Oats though. !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/biggrin.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/biggrin.gif|border=0!
thanks!

bump...cause I really want to hear responses to this also.
Unless you waste your money buying some kind of enriched brown rice or pre-cooked rice (to save cooking time), you are best off buying brown rice in the bulk bins. It'll be cheaper and you can pick from a variety of grains. I prefer short grain myself. The cooking time for any brown rice would be similar, all between half an hour and an hour. A good way to waste your money would be to buy a rice cooker or a pressure cooker, either of which could save you the aggravation of watching the pot.
I have not tried it yet (I have some in my freezer, just haven't eaten it yet), but Rice Expressions makes an organic brown rice. it takes 3 min in the microwave. According to rice expressions it is the way they cook it that it can be "recooked" so to speak in only 3 min. You can check it out at riceexpressions.com. I know my local Kroger food store sells it in their frozen organic food section (I mention this bcz when I looked up store locators it did not give me Kroger as an option).
I like Texmati brand. They make a brown, red and wild rice blend that's very handy and versatile.
Plus, it comes in a nice big clear plastic container, so it's easy to tell when you need more.
Ariann

I have a rice cooker, and my school has a local market that sells brown rice in the large bins. It had short grain and long grain. I was like whatever I'll take either. So, say I buy it out of the bin and want to use my rice cooker, do I use the same proportions of water to brown rice? Like one plastic cup of rice to half a cup of water?

the real stuff! i love it chewy and yummy
thanks so much for responding everyone!

yay for brown rice

I recently threw a box of Texmati stuff out, after my partner bought it and I had it sitting on the shelf for half a year. Sodium, sodium, sodium,... Healthy I would not name it.

Use the same proportions you would with white rice, then throw in a splash or two extra of water for good measure (because brown rice is chewier and sometimes takes a bit more water).

Who cares??? It's tasty.
Throw some mushrooms in there, and you have a great stuffing.
Bulk bins rule! Head to your nearest Wild Oats or Whole Foods. There is plenty to choose from, and the awesome thing is you can get just enough to try and if you don't like it you aren't stuck with a whole bag!
