Hi - My name is Jay and I am a cereal addict

I love cereal. I eat it for any meal and often in a huge bowl. I think this is probably my weight loss achilles heal.

Granola, Life, Cherrios, Peanut Butter Bumpers - even my kid's Clifford Crunch (the Big Red Dog..). There aren't many cold cereals I don't enjoy. I have on occasion eaten a whole box in a day. I cannot stop at one bowl or one serving size. Yes, I am a cereal addict.

I am wanting to start a cereal support group.
If you want to join me please post your story and update periodically.

My goal is at least 2 weeks without cold cereal. Oats, bran, cream of wheat are allowed and are better for you than cold cereal. From that point I will see how I feel and if I have lost any weight. Obviously I will need to replace these carbs with some "better" carbs. If it goes well I will shoot for another two weeks and see how I do.

I am starting to cold sweat already....

Re: Hi - My name is Jay and I am a cereal addict
hey, another cereal addict here. i just cut cereal from my diet for a month in order to lose my "winter-weight". ive gone three days without it. i eat oatmeal instead. could never stop at one bowl. its not just a question of the cereal being caloric or anything but the fact that its one thing i lose control over, and so until i regain my eating discipline, im depriving myself of that treat. its not a question of just losing weight but regaining discipline, and cereal is my weak-point. i was also starting to eat just cereal and less and less fruits and veggies and natural stuff. so here we go, back in control...am going cereal-less until april 15. i've lost weight already, which shows how i was eating ridiculous amounts of it =] i figure at the end of this i wont even crave it that much anymore....

Re: Hi - My name is Jay and I am a cereal addict
Cereal Addict here...I don't usually buy cold cereal at all and have learned to survive with oatmeal w/ soy milk. My boyfriend loves honey nut cherrios and I don't care for those too much so that helps. Oatmeal has so many possibilities. I will occassional by a healthy cereal like Special K w/ berries and have it with soymilk, banana, and berries. Putting all the fruit on helps fill me up. In college I use to eat bowl after bowl while studying and it affected my weight a little. I just have no will-power so I keep it out of the house.

I eat my cereal every morning, it really gets me pumped up for the day...

But you know they say a serving is 30gram, I eat like 2-3 servings for my breakfast! Haha, that sucks >,<

Sounds like you're addicted to the sugar in the cereal. This is just from looking at the "cereals" that you eat. They're all loaded with too much sugar. When I buy cereal, I make sure that there's little or no added sugar. Sometimes I think the manufacturers purposely load up their cereals with sugar to get people addicted to them.

Hey Guys,
Just thought I've offer another options over oatmeal... my favorite breakfast warm cereal is wheatabix or quinoa. Wheatabix can be eaten either hot or cold, but its just pure wheat... its not sugary and its good for you. Quinoa is this super faux grain that is a great alternative to oatmeal. I usually eat it with some raisins in it. SOOO good. You can usually find it in bulk sections of natural food stores.

How do you prepare it? I was at Safeway the other day and waiting in the checkout when I saw the person in front of me with a bag of Quinoa in her basket (when I looked at her, she looked like a runner...then I looked at her shoes...then I was SURE she was a runner... )

I had to give up Peanut Butter Bumpers a month ago. That stuff is crack - not cereal. I would eat a box in a day. Peanut Butter Cap'n Crunch was my favorite until they stopped using the foil bag - the taste was indeed affected by that cost saving change.

Man, this triggered a flashback for Hairy Trotter. A few years back, Mrs. Trotter picked up a couple of boxes of Peanut Butter Bumpers (aka The Devil's Manna, aka Crack in a Sack). I did not ask for them, and I felt guilty when I ate them, like I was depriving some fat little kid somewhere of a sugar high by taking his junk. Then the binge began. I ate both boxes in a couple of days, then took a special trip to the store to get more. And then another trip for more. Those smug little hippies that work at Whole Foods got to know me well. And laugh at me behind my back. Long story short, after days of binging on the stuff, I was reduced to sitting on the couch, staring at the TV with crumbs stuck in my goatee, feeling bloated and blue.

Never eaten that stuff since. Or any of those hyper-sweet Captain Crunch-esque Boxes of Evil. I think I blew some sort of gasket during that bender.

Re: Hi - My name is Jay and I am a cereal addict
Lesson learned here...don't feed your kids sugar-laden cereals...or any other sugar-laden foods for that matter. You'll just be setting them up for a lifetime of battling their weight. It's no coincidence that the cereals with the most sugars have boxes and prizes designed to entice children to get their parents to buy them.

P.S. Now I sound like some paranoid freak...

Honeynut cheerios and raisin bran for me!

I do however limit myself to only one 3/4 cup serving. I put it in the smallest bowl I can find so that it looks like more than it is. I always want to go back for a second scoop, but rarely give in.

Maybe the nutrients? I don't know, but its better than just bread.
