Training in Virginia

I have decided to do my first triathlon (Dewey Beach Sprint) in Sept. I recently quit smoking and have started to train. I have always been very active and play baseball several days a week. I am looking for a group or a place to train in Northern Virginia. My main concern is the swim...I need some coaching for stroke improvment etc...it has been a while since I swam (other than with my kids) I have a tendancy to overdo things and go full out to early..Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Training in Virginia
Depends on where you are at in Northern VA. I have recently gotten into the sport, used to be a runner (until shin splints forced me to tri's), and I train 8 times a week. I swim up on FT. Belvoir, I work there (contractor) so I go early in the morning (twice a week) to swim. As for biking I live in Stafford, so I go to Prince William Forest Park, which has a nice loop (hills) and there are always others biking there as well.

You have ample time to train between now and Sep., if your goal is to just complete it, no problem. Is a sprint tri?

The thing is to be true to yourself when assessing your fitness level, because the training does put a lot of strain on the body, and you do not want to overtrain. So if you have to start low (workout ex: swim 200m, bike 5 mi, run 1-2 mi) then that is better than over shooting.

The way I train is swim Mon and Wed mornings, run Mon and Wed late afternoon and Sat morning, bike Tues, Thurs, and Sun. Friday (off). This seems to work well for me, but I was strong into running before, so my endurance level is very good. I also have the time to do this much exercise. The main thing is to look around (Internet) to get a general workout program and adjust it acoordingly.

Remember if you haven't been doing any aerobic exercising (ie. running(consistently), biking, swimming, aerobics, ect..) then start off easy and slowly increase your workouts.

Good Luck!

Then you are a little out of the way for PWFP, it is outside the front gate of Quantico Marine base. What kind of bike are you looking at getting?
