Re: Multivitamin suggestions
I am 43, run about 30 miles per week, am losing weight (yeah!) and I absolutely DETEST taking any kind of pill, be it vitamin, aspirin, or whatever. Just can't be bothered to remember to do something everyday - even if it is good for me.

My solution is that I drink my vitamins! I get this stuff called Super C. There is a similar product called Emergen-C, that comes in little packets in various different flavors and you put it in your water. Sort of like Crystal Light, but it has a TON of vitamins and because they are liquid, they absorb into your system faster, and they actually taste good.

But, when all else fails, Flintstone vitamins ROCK!

How is remembering to add a packet to your water every day any less of a bother than remembering to take a pill every day?

Vitamins make me sick, even if I take them with food. I have found that chewable vitamins are the solution. I don't know why, but they don't bother me a bit. Trader Joes have some called "Trader Darwins". They are high potency, inexpensive, and they don't taste bad. However, they probably don't taste near as good as the Flinstone Vitamins.

My daughter is also an adult female and hates the vitamins etc. So she now takes "Vitaballs" which I guess are a chewable kids version. I think two colors to pick from. Are they any good?.......Not sure but certainly better than nothing. They look like gumballs .

Re: Multivitamin suggestions
Flintstones are great. Most adult multivitamins contain about twice as much of each nutrient as children's vitamins, but if you're eating a balanced diet you're probably getting most of what you need from your food anyway so it doesn't matter.

The other thing to try would be a multivitamin without iron, since that tends to be the #1 thing that can bother your stomach. I don't know if Flintstones have iron or not.

I personally take Natures Way "two -a- day w/o iron".

They also make a drink called "Alive". It comes in powder and it is a means to drink if you dont want a pill.

I used to buy generic but there is a difference (you can usually see B-vitamins in your urine).

Re: Multivitamin suggestions

Hi Chris, If your metabolism is slow, vitamins may not be your main solution. In all likelihood, you are probably not eating enough. Yes, you heard me right. Your metabolism slows down when you put yourself in "starvation" mode. Food is energy and when you deprive your body of energy, it reacts as if there is a famine and your metabolism slows down naturally in order to conserve energy until the "famine" is over. This will make it very difficult to lose weight as your body is working hard to reserve your fat stores as long as possible.

My suggestion is to eat six small meals per day. Eat things that will not spike your blood sugar. Spiking your blood sugar drives more fat into your fat cells and will leave you tired and hungry all the time. Here is an example of a list of foods that will spike your blood sugar. These are simple carbohydrates that are high glycemic.

White potato, white rice, white bread, bagel, soda pop, french fries, white bagel, angel food cake, rice crispies, donuts, graham wafers, parsnips, cranberry juice cocktail, fruit rollups, jelly beans, pretzels and snickers bars.

Here are a sample of a list of foods that are low glycemic and will not spike your blood sugar as high. These are complex carbohydrates that will digest and burn slowly so that you can have long lasting energy to last you through your run and your day.

Apples, cherries, grapefruit, peaches, plums, pears, avocado, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cucumber, yam, lentils, chick peas, whole grain wheat bread, sourdough rye bread, all bran cereal, oatmeal (not instant), brown rice, lowfat yogurt, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans and walnuts.

Never take vitamins on an empty stomach. This could help you with the queasy feeling and it will help your body to absorb the vitamins much better.

Here are two things to check out.

  1. If you are trying to get your metabolism up and lose weight, check out the Healthy for Life Program. It concentrates on teaching you how to eat so you won't spike your blood sugar, how exercise will speed up your metabolism and what nutritional supplements will help you to increase energy and lose weight. It is not a diet. Click Here to see the three reasons Why Diets Fail.
  2. Consider upgrading your multivitamin. There is an independent study that was done by Nutrisearch Labs a few years back. They studied over 1500 multivitamins over a six year period and rated them according to 18 scientific criterion and how effective they were. I thought the vitamin I was taking was one of the best on the market. To my surprise, they rated it lower than average. Only 33 vitamins got a 5 star rating. Four of those got a gold, five-star rating. Click on the following link to read about the study and the book. Find out how your vitamin was rated.

Re: Multivitamin suggestions
Flintstones!!!! When I was pregnant my Dr recommended that I take them because regular vitamins made me sick. Now I do Centrum Silver and I do get nauseated if I don't eat before I take them.
