What a great group! It looks like most of you will be doing your 1/2's before me and Mary Kay (May), so keep us posted on how your training goes. What did you have to do differently as you increased your distances? Any jedi mind tricks you'd like to pass alonng for those mental barriers? Based on your race dates it looks like some of you are about to, or have started your taper! And there's one person - I don't remember who - that is running their 1/2 this weekend. I can't wait to hear all about. Its the personal stories that keep me pushing to create my own.
Mary Kay- here's a link to a runners world article about balancing running with colds: http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,7120,s6-241-286--9082-0,00.html My guess is you are not the only one dealing with this. One suggestion I've tried to follow is to not push (distance or speed) when not feeling 100%. Have you found a better "place" with your training group? I've been training for my 10k with a friend in Chicago- we are on the same weeks, and we tell each other when we are running and how we did. I got an early morning text just before my first 5 miler wishing me good luck - so I had to do it, even with my doubts. Then the next day it was her turn, I returned the favor. Its helped me stay motiviated- and given me someone to whine too.
Britta- when you figure out how to train for the hills of Big Sur let me know. We've got plenty of big hills here in WV, I just question sanity of running up and down them for fun! But that would be a dreamy race.
Cheryl- Do you know any good IT Band stretches? Maybe try YouTube, you certainly don't want anything to stop you know that your this close. There is also a wrap that a friend of mine used that helps- I think it helps stablize the band.
iI'm on the last week of my HH10Kplan 6 miles set for thrusday am- I've had to juggle & squeeze some things due to a trip. Yesterday I did my 3 mile run in the toughest winter conditions to date- but I did not want to use the treadmill. Windchill was 6, with about 2 inches of snow on top of some ice. My husband thought I was crazy, heck - I was crazy. 2 silk long underwear shirts, silk leggings, windresistant sweatpants, silk balaclava (my fav- winter gear), gloves and then my yaktrax. It was awesome! By the time my 5 minute walk was over I was comfortable, the Yaktraxs made crunching sound in the snow and ice with every step and by the end, I was soaked in sweat. How fun is that. I only did 3 miles and I could feel it my calfs, I think my stride was different- shorter steps maybe. My time was about 1 1/2 minutes slower per mile, and my breathing heavier than normal- but it was quiet, pretty and a lot more fun than the gym. Just happy I didn't have to do the 6 mile run in it- but I'd be happy to do my short runs in those conditions again. It makes me more hopeful for the 1/2 in May.
Happy running and good health to you all
