Best tracking device

Hello.  I've been running for a couple of years and would like to have some kind of device to help me track my pace and distance in real time.  I don't need a lot of other features, just something that would be easy to use as I'm running and is fairly inexpensive.  Any recommendations?

A lot of my running friends use the Nike ipod app http://www.apple.com/ipod/nike/run.html

Honestly, I do not, but I think it is a great option.  I cling to an old-fashioned running journal and actually write down notes every day because I am forced to document progress or lapses and so on.  Anyway, I think the above is a good, more modern and affordable recommendation...many rely upon it with happy results.

    Best of luck!

Looks like you might need some type of runners GPS watch. Some track real time and the info from the run can be loaded to your PC for further evaluation. I have one and really like how its helped. There is another thread here that talks about this very subject. Check it out and good luck!!

Garmin 305 will give you all the info you want, you can get them thru amazon for around 150.  Last year you could find them for about 120 but the 305 has preformed better than newer model so the price went up some.  the 205 is a little cheaper but does not have a hearth rate monitor, I think the extra 20 or so go with the 305, HR monitor can help you with your training.

I agree with BOSNPM!! I have a 305 too and use the HR monitor , pace timer always. I think its the best bang for the buck.

The 305 is a fine unit, but there are a bunch of newer devices out there from Garmin and others.  With the current pricing on the 305, it's worthwhile to seriously look at the Garmin Forerunner 410 or similar.

dcrainmaker.com has very detailed reviews on a lot of different gps watches.

Nike+ GPS App is inexpensive (if you already own an iphone/ipod) and easy/fun to use! If not Nike+ sportsband is around $40 and very simple. Inexpensive compared to the $100-$200 GPS watches.

@Dobrobuck - yes, 305''s discontinued (after six years!) so the resellers with stock have been raising prices to milk the people who want a 3xx series device but don't want to spend the money for a 310xt.

I use the runkeeper app on my droid, I think there's an iPhone app also.

It's free, easy to use, and gives time/distance/pace.

Also a website for tracking and trending.

    Hard to beat free.
