Olympic Distance Recommendations?
-
Like (0)
This past year was my first of Triathlon. I did three sprints, including a pool-based swim, as my first. Next year I want to try the Olympic distance. I'd love to get something on my calendar early in the season to motivate my training over the winter.
Does anyone have any recommendations for an olympic tri in the NYC area in the first half of 2012 (ideally april/may)?. I've done some poking around on active.com and other sites but haven't found anything yet. Ideally I'd like to stay in an area accessible by public transport from NYC. Getting my bike any further than that just turns into a pain.
Thanks!
kevin

That is more on the sprint end. 1.5k Swim, 40k Bike, 10k Run is an olympic distance.
The event power olymipic, I believe is in September.
If you are in the New York, Long Island Area, go to my website. We have group training sessions all the time for all levels.

These are all Olympic distance options. You can get to Montauk from NYC via Public transport so why not try the Mighty Montauk Triathlon on June 9th www.mightymontauk.com. If you want to really challenge yourself do the Rev3 Quassy in Connecticut on June 2nd. http://rev3tri.com/quassy/races-3/olympic-rev/ Rev3 puts on some of the classiest races but the bike and run at Quassy are hilly. Why don't you volunteer to work at the Nautica NYC Triathlon on July 8th. Then you'll get a guaranteed entry for the 2013 race which is in your backyard. http://www.nyctri.com/Volunteer.htm
Good luck training for your first Olympic. If you've done a sprint than an on olympic is not nearly as hard as you think it is. My first trithlon was an olympic and I'm not a strong swimmer, skilled biker or fast runner. Just did a basic Olympic training program and went for it.
Hey Kevin,
Congrats on your sprint tri. Making the jump to the olympic isnt really that difficult. I believe that you dont have to be much more proficient at any one if the disciplines per se, your overall fitness just needs to be better. That being said, my very first ever tri was an olympic (last summer). So needless to say, Im biased towards it. I have to tell you, its an amazing event run by awesome people and all proceeds go to helping abused and neglected children. Easy swim, moderately difficult bike, easy run. This is the Kids in Crisis Triathlon, better known as KIC IT. It takes place in Stamford, CT, about 35 miles north of Manhattan on July 1st.

Good luck with whatever you choose!
Thanks for the feedback everyone!
I decided to do the Philly Tri in June, the Mighty Man Montauk in September & a Sprint in Central Park in August. I also actually had already signed up to volunteer at the NYC TRI so I can get guaranteed entry next year.
Thanks for the encouragement as well. The distance increase on the swim from Sprint to Olympic seems pretty steep, so I've been hitting the pool since the start of the New Year. It should be plenty of time to get ready. Thanks again & good luck to all of you on your upcoming seasons!
