how do u eat polenta (grits)??

i bought some polenta (also called grits) and made a batch this morning....i ate a bit of it pure, then i sprinkled some sugar on top to see the effect....anyway, i'm pretty much virtually clueless how people eat this stuff. so how do you eat your polenta?? the package suggests serving it with honey and milk, but what does that mean, like, making a porride of honey and milk with it or eating it with milk on the side...like you would eat an oreo?? what if you want a more salty approach to it? what then? or do you actually eat this pure....??

I've eaten them both sweet and salty. With honey and a little soy milk mixed in (cream of wheat style) or with basil and butter (salt too). They are great to doctor up or flavor however you want!

I like my grits salty...a little margarine and salt or just cheese. Cheese grits are the best.

They're not the same thing. I guess many people think they are - because recently Alton Brown did an entire episode of Good Eats where he made the two dishes side by side pointing out at each step how dissimilar they are.

Personally, I prefer polenta. Mmm!

I rarely make grits anymore, but in the past when I ate them I would put some margarine & salt on them.

I do polenta frequently, I make it, pour it in a pan and chill it until it's firm, then slice and fry 'til slightly browned on each side (non-stick spray works fine) and top with arriabatta, or anything that you would put on pasta.

I add butter and a little last and pepper and then mix them with either fried or scrambled eggs most of the time. Occasionally, I mix them with grape jelly.

Actually, you can use grits or polenta as a canvas for almost anything you like! I quite often mix veggies, cheese, spices, nuts, tomatoes, fresh greens....anything works because the flavor of the grits is so bland. Shrimp and Grits is a "new southern" staple. (use a bit of panchetta, butter, onions in the grits, then serve grilled shrimp over the grits...very delicious!!)

Traditionally in the south, grits are eaten with a bit of bacon, butter, cheese and salt and pepper.

BTW...instant grits are terrible. Make sure you get the kind that must cook for 5 minutes minimum. The secret is to cook them slowly...they get really creamy and yummy!!!

Now I gotta go make me some!

I love my grits -- polenta less so. Grits are great with butter, salt and pepper (add bacon for a little crunch). Grits are also great with cheese (add hot peppers if you want a little zip). One of the best Southern dishes ever is shrimp and grits -- try it if you can.

I'm not very familiar with the term polenta. How is it different from grits exactly?

Italian grits! I usually mix butter & parmesan cheese into mine and have it with spaghetti sauce or braised meats.
