Fasting and running?

Has anyone herre ever fasted? Or fasted while they maintained some amount of daily running? I am in my third day of a 10-day fast, where I hope to run every day. If you'd like to follow my journey, visit www.michaelselmer.wordpress.com/blog I'm interested in opinions, questions and other people's experiences.
There is no medical or health value in fasting longer than 2 days, don't buy into the snake oil. Running while on such a fast will hasten lean body mass loss. You are better served to do some resistance exercise to spare muscle if you feel compelled to continue.
I agree with ultimatehlth, and actually fasting and running could be dangerous to your health. For starters, there is enough glycogen stored in muscles to last for about 1.5 hours and after that it needs to be replaced with carbs and protein, so keep that in mind in terms of restoring/replinishing your body following exercise. I am not sure what type of fast you are doing, but the clensing remedies that I am familiar with are only for a few days and would not be recommended for runners.
Hi Michael, I quickly perused your blog. I agree with the others it could be incredibly hard on you physically to endure a fast and be running at the same time. I'm not going to judge anyone seeking to challenge themselves, but advise you strongly consider your health and the downside of such an endeavor. Best of luck in your writing career though! Pretty cool you wrote a book in such a short amount of time, you must have been seriously inspired!

Also, if you insist on doing this; please give daily updates in this thread as to what your experiences are as this unfolds. I for one would be sincerely interested in how this goes.

Once the glycogen store are used up, the body turns first to fat stores for energy. Athletes range from 6-13% "Fit" men 14-17% body fat. At the start of my fast, I was at about 14% maybe a little higher. Essential fat stores (those required for normal physiological functioning) for a man are 2-4%. I carefully monitored my weight and during the ten days, went from 157 to 142, a loss of 15 lbs, slightly less than 10% of my body weight.
The experience was, overall, a positive one. (It was completed successfully before Thanksgiving) This is not something I am encouraging others to try, but without a doubt, it improved my health. I deal with arthritis in my hands (moderate pain and stiffness), knees and ankles (minor pain and stiffness) Near the middle of the fast, the pain in my hands disappeared and has, at this point over 3 months later, only just begun to come back.
It is possible that some of the claims made by people who encourage extreme fasting are snake oil. But the medical community has, on the whole, rejected what has been, for me, a beneficial therapy. And they have done this with very little scientific evidence one way or the other. In my opinion, most of the medical community does not want people to be able to manage their own ailments without their (the medical establishment's) assistance.
I did not have the time to chronicle my experience on all of the various threads and online venues that I visit on occasion. That is why I provided the link- www.michael-selmer.com. I did my best to give a thorough recounting of the running fast.

That may be true for most people. If you read my account of the fast, I think you would see that it was beneficial to my health. There is a tremendous amount of anecdotal evidence to support the validity of fasting as a healthy therapy. My own experience is now added to that list.
Thanks! Writing has been my dream and it is rewarding to see it come true. As far as downside to the fast, I was not able to find one, beyond the obvious and superficial. The extra time in the day not devoted to preparing food and eating it was well spent. Those ten days were among the most productive periods that I have had.
if you want to run fast, dont fast. you need food if you want the energy to run fast. if you are not focusing on running fast, you could try but it could cause serious health problems ![]()
Glad to hear it went well Michael! I'm in no hurry to try the fast myself, but impressed you followed through.

There are numerous benefits to doing fasted workouts. Most importantly, increased ability to store glycogen and increased ability to oxidize fat: http://www.runningonthewhiteline.com/2012/01/endurance-training-while-in-fasted.html

I am amazed this conversation is still going because it seems the disadvantages (especially with intense exercise) have been well documented. In simple terms, the liver has to use stored glycogen for energy because the body requires this and when we are not consuming enough....our system begins breaking down the reserves from other souces (fatty acids and protein). There are ways to avoid Ketosis, but I personally would not want to take the chance.
I understand some fast for detox or religious purposes, but the side effects are potentially overwhelming to include anemia, a lowered immune system and an endless array of chemical imbalances. Basically, what is true about normal functioning is magnified for increased activity, so runners require additional amino acids, iron, calcium (and other vitamins and minerals). Fasting depletes the body of these nutrients and supplements do not replace food and are not processed in the same manner. Also, many would not even be candidates for fasting due to existing medical conditions or other risk factors. It is a dangerous proposition alone and I cannot imagine combining it with running.
P.S....take note ladies...most of the research indicates that men are far more likely to derive any of the limited advantages from fasting than women.
Yes, but there are different types of fasts. I believe the OP's 10 day fast is probably not likey to yield any health benefits, and would agree with your assessment.
However, the short 10pm to noon fasts I perform as well as the ocassional fasted run do yield well documented benefits and cannot possibly be grouped in the same category as the fasts you are refering to.

What amazes me is all the naysayers who haven't tried this type of fast, but feel a need to knock it. I've spent a lot of time searching the internet for negative experiences of people who have done longer fasts. I haven't found any. But there are lots of people who say they have experienced numerous positive results--physical, mental and spiritual. My experiences with 10-day and 5-day fasts have been positive and I have felt stronger and had more energy in the weeks after the fast than I did prior to the fast. It seems ridiculous to me for someone to tell ME they don't have any positive benefit. Go ahead and try to convince others ... I know better.
