"Join" the club? Sure, but don't pay for it.
This is a loosely organized social club without a coach or training focus. Slightly more than 100 people are members, but only a handful of those are active. Club events are usually small affairs and nobody has been turned away from an event regardless of membership.
The new $50 fee for 2012 is an increase from $42 in recent years, but this increase is unwarranted as Rincon (1) has over $6,000 in cash, (2) charges additional fees for any large club events, (3) has had no major expenditures, and (4) reduced expenses by dropping its USA Triathlon membership and its liability coverage.
The only benefit from membership is through race discounts, which are extended to all triathlon clubs. Your best bet if you live in Ventura is to find good value in joining another triathlon club for advice/discounts, and then ride with Rincon on a Saturday morning.
I am writing this in response to the review by XProTri. For full disclosure, I am a current board member of the Rincon Triathlon Club, and XProTri is a prior board member who was asked to step down due to conflicts with other board members.
Rincon Triathlon Club does in fact have a coach who is a board member, and multiple coaches who are sponsors. The increase in fees from $ 42 to $ 50 was to cover the additional costs of the USAT membership and insurance, which are in effect and were never dropped. There was a brief lapse in membership due to confusion over duties being handled from a board member change. The Rincon Club spends all of the money taken in on goods and services for it's members. The services include numerous socials and training events, such as swim clinics, a practice triathlon, a bi-weekly duathlon during the summer, club shirts, visors, etc. I beleive the very high repeat renewel rate is a strong indication that most of our members beleive they are getting excellent benefits for their dues. The 2013 membership has been increased to $ 100, but includes the cost of 2 socials that were previously charged seperately at aprox. $ 35 each, and a credit of $ 30 toward a club jersey purchase.
