While I haven't read the book, I totally agree that strength training is an important part of a long-distance training program. The key is discovering exactly what type of training you need to do. Endurance athletes do not need to do a workout that resembles anything like a gym workout from the 90s. There are no peer amid sets, gnome 1 rep max workouts, etc.
From my experience, the best workouts are more like circuit workouts. For the last 3 months I have been doing TRX twice a week and have found this to be very beneficial to my overall body composition and training. As with anything else, your mileage may vary.
