Yesterday, I decided to go for a quick run during the lunch hour, despite feeling like I am coming down with a cold. I ran 6x440, at about 1:30 pace, with a 440 jog in between. I did the workout at a park that is close to my office, on a bike trail that has 1/4-mile markers. Wouldn't you know it, when I am at the point farthest from my car, it starts to rain, and the wind kicks up. By the time I finished, I was good and soaked. The good news is I felt great and I know I am ready for the race, and I don't think it effected my potential cold. By the way, I still feel kind of scratchy in the throat today. No worries. Rain or shine, scratchy throat or not, I am going for it this Saturday.
After seeing pics of the snow, I feel silly complaining about 60 degree weather here in Southern California. Today we expect a high of 71 F.
6 miler last night in a warm (for Ohio) 49 degrees. If I'm wearing shorts in February it must be unbelievably warm.
Should hit the 45 mile mark this week for the first time in 12'.
Training For: 50k Ultra Marathon (2nd)
Congrats on 45. My high week was 31 last fall. I'll be working toward 40-45 miles this summer, and a 25k. I'm looking at a full or a 50k next spring, God willing. I really prefer trails to roads, and fortunately there are a lot of trails in my area, and a lot of trail races.
Happy to say I kicked out a 5k on the dreadmill at my back-to-normal pace last night! I'm debating on how far to make my 'long run' this weekend since I'm coming back from injury... I was calculating that if I want my longest run before my first half to be 11 miles I should shoot for 5 this Saturday and increase 1 mile per week with 2 cutback weeks allowed. I think 5 is do-able if I take it slow and easy.
I got an email today for an annual race weekend I participated in last Sept - ran the 5k with friends and it was my best/fastest race to date. This coming year I plan to run their Half, is it insane that I'm getting excited for that race already??

6xchamp - crazy story! I take it you don't run with your phone? I use my phone and a couple different apps while running. It's great to have everything in one but you know how these IPhones are... battery is dead in no time so I probably would have been in the same boat. Thank God there was someone there nice enough to help you! Beautiful scenery too! Would love to hear what your co-worker had to say!

My last run was an easy 1.5 miles, again with my dad. Then I hit my 2nd kickboxing class for the day. Was a great class.. although, I messed up my new nail polish wearing my gloves - I know, horrible right?! Maybe a longer run this weekend.. If I'm going to run a half at the end of March, I better get on my mileage!!! I took down some of my 2012 races but fear not, (bc I know you are) I'm still planning to do them. They were just taking up so much room on the posting page I was annoying myself! Happy running!

Motivation in the group is right. After reading and posting earlier, I decided to tell the cold to take a hike while I take a run. Ran my out-and-back hill run (4 miles) in 31:25. It's about 115' elevation rise over the first mile, then a gradual decrease over a half mile before a more severe decrease over the last 1/2 mile out, with a 236' drop in the second mile. Then, turn around at the bottom of the hill and start back up. I almost made it back up, but had to walk about 100 yds. before reaching the first crest. Then ran the rest of the way. Despite my 2-day old cold, which didn't really bother me, I was fairly comfortable. Weather was fine, at 45 degrees. I even did it in shorts!
Anaheim...your weather report burst my bubble a little here in ME, even though it was a balmy 45.

Marathon... 45 is a nice number that I have yet to accomplish. I'm happy as heck when I hit 30. Great work.
Off day today, miserable cold rain/snow all day, and yesterday I was out and about in NYC in the cold drizzle all day and now I think I'm getting a cold. yuck!
Run4Choclt - I use a mophie battery pack for my iPhone, I can run a 2 hour long run with mapmyrun, my music and an interval timer going and STILL have enough battery power to last the rest of the day. It's the best phone accessory I've ever purchased. It doesn't fit in a standard armband though so I did a little search and bought an armband that's designed for use with otter cases and it works wonderfully. I haven't done any HM or Marathons with it but it would be interesting to see just how long it goes. It's also great for traveling when you aren't sure if you'll be able to find an outlet to recharge at the airport.
Tomorrow and Saturday are supposed to be 50 degree days, hopefully beautiful days for a run. Just a little over a week til my race, hopefully going from 30-40 weather to 80's won't hurt me too much. Oh how I miss the sun.

My legs are still super sore; I took the dog out for a 2.5 mile run this morning, and the first few steps were killer. Took awhile before my muscles warmed up and stopped fighting me so hard. After the first mile, I started feeling better, and so I pushed the dog a little, pulling a sub-8 mile out of her so I could keep a pace closer to HM pace.

az1414 We all have good and bad runs as you well know. However I'll bet you had something else happening on Sunday. Maybe a little cold working overtime, Maybe some lingering fatigue or stress prior to Sundays run.or maybe just not enough fuel in your system (Hammer gel etc). I have used Hammers Heed before with good result since it helps buffer lactic acid build up and prevent cramps. However I found a Hammer combo that works better for me. 24 hours prior to long runs or HM races I eat extremely light and use Hammer Recoverite as my main meal. Two hours prior to my race or run I drink Perpetuem. It gives me consistent engery with no ill effects. I keep Hammers gel in a small flask. I top off my fuel supply with one serving 15 mins prior to run (100 calories). Then take single servings about every 35 - 40 min. If I get extremely fatigued I'll sometimes add in another. This has made a huge difference in helping me with my finish times and overall performance. Running and training in Florida with high heat and humidity I use endurolytes fizz instead of heed. Within 15 minutes of finishing I drink Recoverite. Except for normal soreness from a good run I have no lingering or ill effects. Check out my times below. My first race was prior to being properly exposed to proper nutrition. Here is an example of what kind of calories your body losses vs what it's assimilation rate is. On aveage a 160 - 165 fit runner burns 700,- 900 calories an hour. Your ideal replinishment or assimilation rate for fuel is ONLY 30% - 40% of that. Which is 240 - 280 calories an hour. In addition on average you'll lose 30 to 90 oz of fluid an hour. Replinishment needs to average 17- 28 oz an hour. You can't run your car withour gas and oil. You also can't run your body without fuel. Good Luck on your race, I HOPE THIS HELPS. I was lucky enough to have a Ironman veteran share this info with me. What a difference!!!!!!

I did a 10k today on tired legs. It was awesome! Two miles on road to a smooth trail that winds through the woods down to the Neuse River, and then climbs back to civilization. Two more miles and two tenths to finish and it felt great! Strength training on Tuesday and cycling twice yesterday, I thought the legs would protest. Rest is on the schedule for tomorrow, I have a long run scheduled for Saturday.

OshCat: I got excited about this next race I'm training for in October; and the race is in April. I don't think you're too "off"!
MelodyLea: I got my new shoes tonight. I got the New Balance MT 101. They're quite lightweight...about 7.5 ounces for a size 8.5. This seems like a good time to transition to less shoe, since I'm running on snow and soft surfaces (like mud!) Going to run in them tomorrow.
LMWEL: It's great to be able to run along the water.Clear Creek, where I run, and even the Platte, where I raced Sunday, aren't like Eastern rivers. You'd have to work hard to drown in either of them in the dry season.
But I think our mountains make up for it
9 miler this morning with a group of friends. Very early wake-up call but it was worth it.
