hot vs cold green tea

I've been drinking 48 oz of hot green tea per day for the last several months.  It has replaced drinking 3-4 diet cokes which has made me feel less bloated.

My question is...now that summer is here it is not as enjoyable to drink hot tea while sweating in the sun is it just as healthy to drink the Lipton diet green tea sold in bottles at convienience stores? There are 0 calories but does it still have the beneficial affects?

thanks

Re: hot vs cold green tea

The Lipton stuff has artificial sweetner (which I try to avoid). I just brew my own green iced tea.  You can either brew at same strength as your hot tea and chill, or cold brew by putting a couple of bags in some cool water and let sit for a couple of hours.  This actually tastes better than the hot brewing.  I add a bit of fresh sqeezed lemon or lime, chill and enjoy.

I think about 8-10 tea bags should do it for a gallon of "sun tea"  Another idea if you want to add your own sweetener is to make ice cubes from apple juice, lemon/lime water, etc. and toss in an ice cube or two when you pour yourself a glass of tea.

Re: hot vs cold green tea

There is a bottled tea. Unsweetened, No Lemon, that I like to get. I don't think it even has anything really bad in it. No sweetner either. It might be Nestea, but I forget the brand. They sell it at the convenience stores, I usually only buy it when I'm on the road on vacation.

But it looks like Lipton has one too (their site doesnt work well in FF):

I do 2 bags per quart of water and let sit for at least 3 hours.  No need to put in the sun...room temperature is fine.

Tammy - I love the ice cube trick.  I'll have to try it.

Re: hot vs cold green tea

FYI - found this at www.worldconsortium.com[/URL" target="_blank">

Iced Green Tea

You should never brew Green Tea with hot water and then cool it to prepare cold, or iced tea.  Instead, please double the amount of the Green Tea leaves used to brew it in cold water in a sealed container.   This way you keep the aroma, the natural color and the medicinal health benefits of the Green Tea.  The reason this way is better, is that you avoid oxidation that can occur if the tea is left open to the air in an attempt to cool it after hot brewing.   The brewing time is actually very short.  For example, 10-15 cups of tea can be brewed in a jar in the ice box in just 30-45 minutes.  Please note that you can refill the jar with water to brew more tea when the level reaches one third full.   You may repeat the same procedure up to 3 times using the same Xianju Green Tea leaves.  It is better than drinking water for walkers, runners, cycling, mountain climbing or any athletic sport in general that demands replenishment of body fluids.

Re: hot vs cold green tea

48 ounces of anything besides water sounds like a lot to me, especially with all the caffeine that comes with that amount. I drink a cup, maybe two at the most of green tea in the morning. But 48 ounces? Maybe I'm wrong, but isn't that a little too much on the body?

Re: hot vs cold green tea

I make tea at twice the strength, then pour it over ice in a martini shaker. Shaking it cools the tea off really fast and dilutes it to the proper amount, then I pour that over ice...

Only takes an extra 20 seconds then hot tea and it's easy cleanup !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|border=0!

(Though I must give credit for this to the local tea shop that makes it this way...)

Re: hot vs cold green tea

We have a Keurig coffee machine at work, and usually have Green Tea "K-Cups".  I use a big cup (about a quart) and fill it with ice, then brew the Green Tea over it.  It brews in about 20 seconds, about half the ice melts, and it tastes great.

I think it's a great way to get both my Green Tea and my water intake throughout the day.  It's also handy for other teas and coffee.
