First marathon - training plan adjustment?

Hello!
In about 5 weeks I'll be running my first marathon, and I've been following Hal Higdon's Novice 2 plan, found ehre: http://www.halhigdon.com/training/51138/Marathon-Novice-2-Training-Program
The next few weeks long runs are like this:
week 13 - 19m
week 14 - 12m
week 15 - 20m
week 16 - 12m
week 17 - 8m
week 18 - marathon
My question is this... I've been training with a good friend since the beginning, and so far we've managed to run al of our long runs together except one. Well, unfortunately for week 15, the 20 miler, we can't make our schedules coincide and if we leave things like they are we'll be stuck running it solo.
We were thinking of running the 20 miler either early, or later. I think running it during week 16 (on a friday, which is when we have been doing most of our long runs), would probably be best, but that would only leave us a 2 week taper. I've heard some people say that the usual 3 week taper is too long anyway, so I wanted to see what the general consensus on here was, before we make our adjustments. The other part of this is that if we do move our 20 miler to week 16, what should we run week 15? It doesn't make sense to run two 12 milers in a row, so we were debating on 15 or 16 miles, but again, I'm interested to see what others think. We REALLY want to run this last long run together if at all possible.
Any tips/advice appreciated!!!

Switch weeks 15 and 16 and enjoy the run with your training partner. You'll be fine. Good luck!
I'd swap weeks 14 and 15
Have the 19 and 20 mile runs back to back
And then the two 12 miles runs back to back
Personally, I would want the 20 mile run at least 3 weeks back from the marathon.
The 12 mile runs could be used for pacing workig
I agree with skypilot, you should prefer to do the 20 at least 3 weeks out.. Though I'm curious - if you can manage 16 in week 15, why not 20?

I also agree with skypilot. Stay with your schedule as much as possible. Running 20 miles is a milestone within itself but if you must run the 20 in week 16 then I would recommend you drop you miles during the following week by 10 to 20% Your legs will appreciate it during mile 22 or 24 of the marathon. Also make sure that what ever distance you choose during week 15 is at marathon pace if not a bit faster in order to push your VO2 max.
I am with sky also!
I agree with sky. 3 week taper may not help you run faster but you will feel better during the race.
LOL
I don't typically agree with myself as much as I see all the agreeing going on here. ![]()

I agree with the rest of the people in here. It is always best to stay with your schedule as much as possible. To you Woody100, good luck for the coming races. On your training, you might also need a GPS or Pulse running watch, you may check out several sites that offer reviews in running watches. I found runningwatchreview.com to be the best in giving such service. Good luck everyone!
